Animals’ food stolen from rescue centre

Volunteers at Second Chance Animal Rescue have been left furious after the centre was targeted by thieves.

The centre is home to chipmunks, rabbits, dogs and cats and has been rescuing animals for more than 30 years.

Vital food supplies have been stolen from the centre just as it is about to take on caring for more animals.

Rose Milne, the co-ordinator at the charity, said: "It's disgusting that people would steal food from rescue animals.

"It's hard enough to raise funds without having this happen."

On top of the donations needed to supply food, the animal shelter also has to spend about £30,000 a year on vets' bills.

Pedigree Chum dog food and Whiskas cat food worth more than £1,800 was taken from a shed outside the centre.

Pets at Home in Eastleigh has offered to donate some food to the charity but Rose believes that it will have to slowly build up the supplies it has lost.

The theft is an extra blow to everyone involved with the charity, as it is hoping to take on a further 19 dogs from Spain in October.

A Hampshire police spokesman confirmed that the theft had been reported and that they were investigating reports of the food being sold in the local area.

Rose added: "There must be somebody somewhere who knows who these people are. To steal from a charity where people donate their time, their money and that's run completely on donations is an utterly despicable act."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 045 4545, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I hope the publicity helps them to replace the stolen food.....but importing dogs from SPAIN?? If Rosie is so concerned about Spanish dogs why not just send her money to an equivalent Spanish charity and save the animals the anguish of the journey and the quarantine?

Why on earth are we importing dogs from Spain?
Personally i think it is fairer to put down any stray/unwanted meat eating animal as the only way to keep them alive is feeding them on other animals that have to be killed for the purpose!
What makes a dog or cat so important that many, many other animals have to die for them?
A rational answer to this question from posters would be nice...but i'm not holding my breath.

Firstly, animal food is mainly made from offcuts not used in the human market - therefore no other animal is actually killed to keep them alive. Considering that the majority of the human population eats meat, would you also say the same of them?? P.S I am a vegetarian so I am not biased on this and am not ignorant enough to think that the whole population will ever become veggies.

There are much better ways of controlling the population of unwanted pets (such as better controls of breeders) other than simply ending their lives - to end a life (any life) is not something to be taken lightly.

What I know about the day to day running of animal sanctuarys such as this one, You could fit on the back of a postage stamp.
£1,800's worth of dog/cat food is a helluva lot a huge amount! Has this been disappearing over time? If so someone close to home?
If it all went in one haul then the thieves must of used a vehicle, Why did'nt anyone hear them? Do they (the animals)not get checked on during the night etc?

Huge sigh- what next? says...

I also should have added that the car/van whatever, would have taken some time to load up.
Maybe there is nobody on the premises at night I dont know.
I just feel that someone should be looking out for this number of animals at all times i.e day and night.

They could, but would probably not get the free stock and kick backs that they would from a major manufacturer.
Usually this happens and the rescue centres promote this food and the manufacturer hopes the new owners will then keep to using their food.
Whilst the food is valued at that price, I would assume that is selling price and not cost, and taking into acount the free stock they will probably have had, the actual financial loss to them would be considerably less, maybe not even as much as half the above figure.

In response to some of the comments above; re the spanish dogs, suffering is suffering wherever you find it, even when it crosses countries. The spanish rescue is closing down and these dogs need our help in the same as any any animal in need. Our rescue is running a separate campaign to help these animal and donations have been made specifically for this cause. A lot of the food that was stolen was donated by pedigree petfoods. Also there is somebody on site 24 hours a day and they are NEVER left alone. Our store shed is right besides the back gates and our animals are all shut in at night time under lock and key. Ujfortunately on this occasion it seems the back gates were unlocked. Of course a vehicle must have been involved and we also lost other items, washing powder, washing up liquid etc and a trolley which was obviously used to move some of the heavy stuff. It would not have taken a few people very long to have done this. The dogs are used to a lot of noise outside the gates and would not necessarily bark at people being about as we have a lot of dog walkers. Also £1800 does not buy a huge amount as pet food is so expensive and you cannot use poor quality food for stressed out rescued animals, as any animal rescue would tell you. Just because most of the food is donated it does not make the loss any less.

Glad someone else noticed that. I was wondering whether she'd been planted or just had really, really short legs.

Exactly what I was thinking. Without meaning to sound too heartless, Spain's dogs should be Spain's problem. They should be focusing on saving and looking after dogs here, not Spain.

I won't be donating now I know that information

By looking after Spanish dogs you are reducing the space and capability to look after dogs in this country and the local area in which you are based.

If you can't see this is going to anger people, you are barking mad...see what I did there?
