Final farewell to QE2’s distinctive red funnel?

IT IS one of Britain’s greatest icons but the unique funnel that crowns Southampton’s legendary liner, Queen Elizabeth 2, could be ripped off after the ship leaves her home port for the last time later this year.

Instantly recognisable, QE2 and her funnel, is an enduring symbol representing the pinnacle of British maritime tradition and has become closely linked to the port of Southampton over the past 40 years.

QE2 has been sold for £50million to a Middle Eastern development company which will transform the Cunarder into a floating hotel at the centre of Dubai.

Fears are growing among shipping experts and former passengers that QE2, regarded by many as the last remaining true ocean-going liner, will be altered to such an extent that her style and classic lines will be lost forever.

This also comes amid disappointment that QE2 will arrive and depart on her last day in her home, shrouded in darkness.

QE2 will leave the port on November 11 when the liner will fly the longest paying-off pennant ever by a Cunard liner.

Once moored at her new berth in Dubai, QE2’s new owners are expecting to spend millions on refurbishing the liner and changing the lay-out, turning it into a hotel, tourist destination and shopping complex.

The new owners are examining schemes for QE2 including removing the funnel and repositioning it on the quayside where it would be converted into a reception and information centre.

Plans also exist to remove the liner’s engines and create a new glass-fronted mock funnel that would be seven decks high and contain ten luxury suites.

John Lillywhite, chairman of the Southampton branch of the World Ship Society, said: “We have also heard that it is likely all the ship’s davits and lifeboats are to go.

“The timings of QE2’s arrival and departure are a great disappointment there will be many people upset at not being able to see her properly in the daylight.’’ Mick Lindsay, Southampton maritime historian, said: “If plans such as these become a reality it would be absolutely horrendous as the QE2 everyone knows and loves would be lost for good.

“It seems Dubai does not care for the ship herself and all that she represents but rather they are only interested in laying claim to one of the most famous names in the world.’’ QE2’s casino is set to be gutted as gambling is against the law in the Gulf emirate, and question marks hang over the future of the liner’s synagogue, which is not likely to be used in the Arab kingdom.

Istithmar, the investment arm of Dubai World, a wholly-owned company of the government of Dubai, which purchased QE2, would not confirm details of its plans but said the whole project could take up to 18 months.

According to the present schedule QE2 will arrive alongside her traditional berth in Southampton’s Eastern Docks at 7am in the November gloom before leaving, more than 12 hours later, in the dark.

Cunard is to stage a farewell firework display before the liner says goodbye to Southampton with three blasts of her whistle.

A Cunard spokesman said: “We have delayed QE2’s departure time of around 5pm until 7.15pm so as people can be home from work and families will be able to gather at Mayflower Park, and along Southampton’s waterfront to see the fireworks.”

Thats what comes of selling to foreign investors, who have no idea, and do not care, of the history or tradition of liners, but only in the profit margins.

I agree. I was referring to the people now complaining about what will be happening to it,those that were probably quiet, prior to it's sale and not interested enough to raise funds to buy it.

"Dubai does not care for the ship herself" They cared enough to spend £50million so far on her, Cunard (or asnyone in the UK) didn't care enough to keep her.
That they're possibly to alter her and turn into a hotel, frankly so what, it's no different from Cunard running her for profit, just that she won't be crossing oceans anymore.

might be your choice to change the wheels, but does not stop us making comments about them.
Same as this story.

The QE2 has ceased to be an ocean going liner, soon it will be a hotel that just happens to float, all character and purpose gone so really however they butcher it, it no longer matters. The arabs have enormous wealth but no style or class,to them all that glisters is gold,in that respect they are like the russian oil barons..rich and tasteless..but cash is king and as Britain crumbles more and more of our heritage will go or be owned by those overseas.

Maybe it's simply a case of Arab 'revenge'? If some of them cannot beat us on military level then maybe there are other ways to 'degrade' us?

They have more obscene wealth that can be imagined so a few million is just small change.

I can just imagine many of the ruling sheiks smirking behind their gold plated palace doors as another iconic piece of British heritage gets kicked out of its rightful homeland.

They are also buying up the English football teams as well - mere playthings and another way to get rid of a few million quid.

The Arabs have been turning Central London into an enclave, spending billions on grabbing the beautiful mansions that once housed British entrepreneurs as well as inflating property prices way out of reach of 'ordinary' Londoners.

Maybe just another aspect of 'stealth' jihad?

PS Please note that Dubai along with other mega-rich Arab states cant be bothered to help out their Palestinian 'brothers' The conflict is quite handy for the Muslim fundamentalists and keeps the problem bubbling away.

Totally with you your Highness, and as a fellow Woolstonian I wonder how long it will be before like Shirlski and Portswoodvich we fall to the east european influx and become the minority in the new Woolstongrad.Rich or poor we are under siege.

How many times do we have to say goodbye to this bloody ship? I;ve ben told by the Echo at least three times that it's the last time ever - now it's back again! It's like listeing to Kevin bloody Keegan saying he'll never manage again.

Southampton will never again see such a world-famous record-breaker again, let alone have one emblazoned with SOUTHAMPTON on her stern.
I think its fitting to say goodbye over and over again.

QE2 is the most famous ship in the world.
The fastest cruise ship in the world
The furthest travelled ship EVER of any kind - a record unlikely to ever be broken - nearly 6 million miles!
She's the last true transatlantic liner, the last of a long line of famous "ships of state".

The reason nobody else made bids for her, is they didn't get a chance.

QE2 has given me some of the happiest times in my life and I will miss her.

From what I gather, the same company were going to have the Norway to turn into a floating hotel, and now that ship is being scrapped.

The same company claimed that they were going to turn the Norway into a floating hotel, she is now on the beach at Alang.
Have they landed themselves a hot potato, as they have considerable business interests in Southampton

question for you roblightbody, Clydeside how come the QE2 never earned the right to have the letters R.M in front of her name, where has the old Elizzy and old Mary did.

Quite right Southy - the old Queens had a very proud history in WW2 - far too fast to be troubled by the U Boats. We went to see off the QE2 wehen we were told it was "the last time" - but then it was back again, and then again, and now again!

Reply for Southy:-

RMS simply means Royal Mail Ship and can be given to any ship that carries mail on a 'line' service. This became mostly redundant for the Queen's transatlantic when scheduled flights took over.

QE2 did in fact have this prefix, although I don't think she does now.

lol andy, that was her last cruise you see her off on, this november will be her last trip,a one way trip to rot away slowly.
the point i was trying to get with roblightbody, Clydeside was that the QE2 never earn her right to have the letters RM in front of her name, she only had the letters MV,to get the letters RM she had to beat SS united states record run across the atlantic,by going for the hale's trophy or the blue ribbon records.whitch are mail runs.the hale's record is now owned by r.branson in his boat virgin.
