A WOMAN had the shock of her life last night when she found a donkey looking up at her from middle of her cattle grid.

It is thought the female donkey had tried to leap the grid at Mockbeggar, in Ringwood, but instead landed spread-eagled on the grid with all four legs down the holes.

Helen Reynolds, 55, said: "I've never seen anything like it. The first thing we asked is how it got to the middle of the grid because there is no way it could have walked there.

"When I went over to it looked up at me like it had always been there. It may have been in shock and it had a few cuts.

"In the past we have always found animals were too intelligent to try and get across the grid."

Fire crews from Eastleigh and Ringwood attended and the clumsy animal was eventually hoisted from the grid at 5pm.

The jenny donkey was then reunited with her foal and returned to the owners nearby stables.
