ONE of Hampshire’s most deadly roads has claimed yet another victim.

A 51-year-old motorcyclist is the latest person to be killed in a crash on the A326 on the Waterside.

The man from Hythe was riding his Suzuki south along the Marchwood bypass when he was in collision with a Volvo car coming out of Twiggs Lane.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It comes just three weeks after an 11-year-old schoolgirl and her stepdad were killed in a motorbike accident on the same road.

Terry Stubbs, 29, and his stepdaughter Channon died at the scene after the motorbike they were travelling on collided with a car near Dibden Purlieu. Their funeral took place just last week.

A 73-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until October 24.

The latest accident took place at 10pm on Saturday.

The occupants of the Volvo were not injured in the collision.

The male driver, 52, from Teddington, Middlesex, is helping police with their inquiries.

Officers investigating the tragedy are appealing for witnesses.

Anyone with any information should contact the Totton roads policing unit quoting Operation Dennison on 0845 045 4545.

Hampshire highway chiefs have already vowed to hold an inquiry into the A326 after calls for the safety of the route to be reviewed following the double death last month.

A spokesman from Hampshire County Council said: “As with any fatal accident or accident resulting in serious injury, we do investigate, but we cannot carry out our investigations until the police have concluded theirs.

“Our road safety officers will be looking into it and assessing what safety measures would be appropriate.”

Brian Dash, councillor for Hythe and Dibden, said: “I think we have got to look very closely at this road.

“Something like double white lines may help. But you cannot make any sensible suggestions until we have seen a report of the accident.”

Fawley councillor Alexis McEvoy said: “A lot of people are calling for a dual carriageway but my feelings are that it would encourage more people to go faster.

“The road needs to be looked at – engineers need to assess the problem and report back so that the public know what they are thinking.”

The road is used by 20,000 vehicles a day and is often at a standstill during rush hour periods.

However it is plagued by speeding drivers when traffic is lighter.

Pedestrians have also fallen victim while crossing the A326, which runs between junction 2 of the M27 at Ower and Fawley.

Schoolboy Ryan Crouch, 11, pensioner Frank Harrison, 83, and mother-of-two Kathleen Gundre, 61, have all lost their lives in accidents on the road in the past four years.

Volvo driver not local, 10 pm Saturday night - I can guess which way this story is going to go. How hard is it for car drivers to double check for cyclists/motorcyclis
t when they pull out of a junction?

How very sad.

My condolences.

Yet another accident on the A326.

How many more accidents will it take to get this road improved?

I ride a motor bike and I cant beleive the amount of times cars pull out without looking or pull out thinking they can make it. For christ sake is getting to the destination a moment earlier worth a life!!!! My thoughts are with the families of those involved. Hope my family dont have to go through this for the sake of a minute or two (not saying the car owners were to blame in anyway in this terrible incident)

Nasty Junction there, no lights, no roundabout, no slip lanes (worthy of the name). I have seen many accidents over the years. The blame lies with the car pulling onto the by-pass, who should have ensured that the road was clear. Wasn't this the same problem as that kiddy getting killed?

This motorcyclist was my best friends husband. He leaves behind a wife & 2 daughters.
Need I say anymore?

Have said for a long long time that they should ban traffic turning right onto A326 out of Twiggs Lane.
Last thing we want are traffic lights which will bring A326 to a standstill especially in rush hour etc

I live in Holbury and ride from there to town and back most days. I normally try to tuck myself in behind a car if possible if not approach with EXTREME caution as I have had two cars pull out into my path and one did not even look. I ride a big FJR1300, silver and have my lights on all the time. My answer would be to close the junction completly and make the entrance through Main Road / Hythe Road.

There is something about this road, that makes drivers lose the plot. The standard of driving along it is poor. Should be a 40 zone, reinforced with average speed camaras OR make it dual carridge way.

Sadly as soon as they do that the "usual brigade" of motorists will kick up about jow unfair speed cameras are, yada yada yada.

My view has become, in recent years, that of if you cant behave or act sensibly then you deserve speed cameras and the fines.

I also think there should be more zero tolerance for drivers who completely lose the plot.

I'm sure the full details of this will emerge in time. Very sad, and very common now.

Condolences to the families involved.

This is so sad my condolences go to the family.

I am also a rider of these roads and urge everyone to take that second look!

something needs to be done with the junction the road is to fast for people pulling out, people hesitate trying to get over to turn right which is causing these types of accidents.

please remember 1 more look could save a life!

To start with my condolences to all family and friends.
Please do not put all the blame for these tragic accidents on the car drivers.
That junction of the A326 and Twigs Lane is one of the worst on that road, the view to the right when pulling out of Twigs Lane is restricted by the curve in the A326 and it is almost impossible to see ANY vehicle coming at speed from Totton direction let alone a motor cycle. If the speed of the bike was high (I am not saying it was in the case)the car driver has NO chance of seeing it until it is too late.
I was driving along the A326 between Fawley and Kennels Corner on Saturday afternoon when a guy on a large Yamaha overtook me and 4 other cars and only just missed having a head on smash with cars comming in the other direction,so PLEASE motor cycle riders (and I used to be one)take heed and also be safe

I travel this road daily by car having given up motorcycling some years ago; the recent tragic fatalities brings into focus the dangers of this busy link road, and with many other serious near misses going unreported. I have seen many at the Twiggs lane Junction, and where vehicles queue to turn off into the Priory, and of vehicles pulling out from one of the many gravel car parks further up toward Fawley. Better thought and planning should now be applied, the Twiggs junction barred for access onto the A326, no right turn into the Priory (use the next roundabout), do away with all slip in gravel car parks, and finally give local residents better access to the forest by providing another few pelican type crossings between Applemore and Hardley.Lets not have to wait until another accident before somehting positive is done.My Condolences to the families involved with both recent events.

The accident happened at about 10 pm the road is in total darkness so any approaching vehicle be it bike or car would have been seen unless of course the car driver wasn't looking.Having just spent the last six days in France with motorcyclist
concerned I would say without doubt this is yet another case of a car pulling out in front of a motorcycle and no amount of speed cameras white lines or the like would have prevened this tragic accident.

Condolences to another family.
This road is lethal - the entire length of it should be made no-right-turn. (Including into the priory) It is not difficult to go to the next roundabout rather than running the gauntlet of the A326 and a whole lot safer.
This road has to be examined and the problems rectified before more lives are lost.

It happened again today, I approached the turning from Southampton and was doing no more than 50, I slowed as a young lady in a VW Golf stopped, had a quick look and pulled straight into my path. Luckily I knew exactly what she was going to do before she did and pulled back. Sorry to say she has a fair sized dent in her door from my size 11 boot. By the way the dodgy overtaking Yamaha a few posts ago was not me!
