Why our Abi is truly a top dog

EIGHTEEN months ago she was found abandoned wondering through Hampshire woodland by a concerned RSPCA officer.

With her head covered in cigarette burns and a timid nature, there was little hope that Abi would find a loving family to take care of her.

But the three-year-old Saluki was quickly adopted by a couple from Fareham and after some tender loving care has just been nominated for the RSPCA’s Rescue Dog of the Year competition.

Special For owners Dave and Margaret Griffiths it was that first meeting at the Stubbington Ark RSPCA that made them realise how special Abi was.

Dave, a retired accountant, of Lechlade Gardens, Fareham, said: “When we went to go and see the dogs at the centre they were all going ballistic and barking. But she was just lying in the back staring into space.

“I called her over and tapped the wire and she walked over to me with her tale wagging, sniffed my hand, gave me a lick and then went and sat back down. It was as if she chose us. I looked at Magi and we just said ‘that’s the one’.”

Margaret, 54, a former insurance underwriter, added: “She’s been absolutely brilliant ever since we had her. Due to David’s health he stumbles over occasionally but she will wait with him on the floor until help arrives. It’s as if she senses trouble.

“If anything ever happened to her I don’t know what we would do.”

Abi is one of 90 dogs from around the country with a chance of being named overall RSPCA Rescue Dog of the Year.

How come the RSPCA/Ark rescued this **** (very nice she is though) but not the cat I found which had a broken leg. Stubbington Ark say they don't treat injured animals, just rescue abandoned ones. Why can they rescue a dog that is covered in cigarette burns, but not a cat that has been hit by a car? "Sorry Bright Spark that cat there is badly injured but it hasn't been abandoned" What sort of response is that????

I love animals and was so concerned during the Spring to see a pony and her foal with another pony in a field almost hidden from sight - they were all a bag of bones. I telephoned RSPCA and a call centre came on - two/three weeks went by and someone came through and said could I go and see if the ponies were looking better - unfortunately I lived many miles away but I went back and they were just the same. At the time ponies were kept in terrible conditions and Prosecutions took place - I heard later that owners started to hide them away. I gathered from the call centre that there were a handful of RSPCA men over an area of hundreds of miles and this particular area would have been covered by an officer a hundred miles away or so. I would like to know a breakdown of how much our donations go to respond to/go all SOS.

I love animals, I pay directly into their collection boxes. Although I feel sad about the two previous posts, I also am very happy that one animal has been saved.

I'm glad Abi has now found a happy home.
