Bus wars

A BITTER bus war has broken out between two rival companies – and this time it’s personal.

Earlier this year family-owned Black Velvet stepped in to cover a busy route between Southampton and Eastleigh abandoned by Bluestar.

Now Bluestar has fought back by reinstating buses along its rival’s main route – arriving three minutes earlier. Bluestar even put on a free bus for a week to promote the service.

The situation has baffled passengers who say they would rather see Bluestar use its money to put services along different routes instead of flooding the main route that links Southampton, Eastleigh and Velmore.

Passenger Stan Jarvis said: “It’s typical. You wait for a bus and then two come along at once.”

The boss of Black Velvet claims that Bluestar is being aggressive and trying to squeeze them out with its new Beep buses. Managing director Phil Stockley used to be Bluestar’s managing director and Black Velvet has managed to poach operations manager Taz Kelley and a handful of drivers from its huge rival.

He said: “This really sticks in the throat. We have carefully planned our routes in areas where Bluestar didn’t run a bus, had cancelled its service, didn’t serve regularly or didn’t serve well.

“I cannot believe that the company seems to think that it can cut services but nobody else can have a go. They are just throwing their weight about.

“Some of our buses have been empty because of what they have been doing and I don’t how this is going to affect our business. I can’t believe their bully-boy tactics.”

Both companies are based in Eastleigh but are run on very different scales. Bluestar, which is part of public transport giant Go-Ahead, dwarfs its independent competitor.

Bluestar employs 150 staff, has 25 main routes with many smaller services, 67 buses on the roads a day and has been running in some form since the 1920s.

Black Velvet on the other hand has 12 employees, six main routes and five college services, just ten buses and has been running for less than a year.

Bluestar operations director Andrew Wickham said that the decision to start running services just in front of the new competitor was not personal.

He said: “This was a business decision pure and simple. With rising fuel prices and free passes for the elderly it is more important than ever that we protect our interests.

“We are not scared of competition but they are deliberately creaming off some of our passengers.”

He said it would be illegal for the two companies to meet to try to resolve the issue and denied that Bluestar wanted to drive the smaller company out of business. He added: “If their buses are full because they have done something innovative to get people out of their cars it is one thing but taking our passengers is another.”

Hypocrite. No thought of the customers when he cancelled the services, and he only reinstated when another company came in.

If Bluestar has spare busses and drivers, instead of trying to force a small private company off the road, who, after all are only running a service which Bluestar abandoned, why can't they extend their current Service No. 3 to continue beyond Kings Corner at Botley, and extend the Service to Wickham?

But Andy the appearance is otherwise. I hope the Council consider your behaviour when agreeing subsidies in the future.

I thought subsidies were to make fares cheaper for the public, not too increase costs and reduce sevices. The subsides must got to making the fat cats fatter.
Why don't they do as in most other countries in europe: cheap fares people can afford and have better services

At least they get buses that turn up ! Anyone that is unfortunate enough to live in a Firstbus only area is lucky to have a bus turn up at all.It has got worse since the hilariously named "streamlined" timetables have been introduced.
How do Firstbus get away with it ?
Ancient buses, rude staff, constant price hikes and worst of all half the time the buses dont turn up.

i use the number three bus with blue star to get to collage and botley today i want to botley and was waiting for an hour ad a half for a bus to take me back from botley even though one bus went past the other side to go down and turn around it never came back and the bus i take in the morning is never on time it is always late its sopose to come at 7:33 and doesn't till about ten to eight. i think that blue star should stop tryin to pit other companies out of bussiness and concerate on the routes its got and make them run more on time

This is exactly how Stagecoach became the monopoly provider in other areas: engage in bully-boy, gangster tactics to put your smaller rivals out of business, then hike up the prices...

My two daughters were in Southampton today waiting for the Velvet B to Eastleigh when they were approached by a Beep Bus (Bluestar) driver & asked if they wanted his bus they said no thank you we are waiting for the Velvet bus they were then told to shut up in a really nasty way by the Beep Bus driver that just goes to show what an unfriendly company bluestar really are my advise to all you bus users out there is use Velvet buses & get a friendly helpful driver not a nasty miserable driver that you get with bluestar.

Lets all support the initiative shown by Velvet buses. Blue line used to be great, before they became part of the massive group to which they now belong. Now they are heading back to nationalisation days. Come on you VELVETS!!!

Blue Star are really proud of their new ??service B??

They use unbranded red buses which tried to hide their identity and after all who had heard of the registered (Marchwood Motorways)which has to appear on the bus (MM is part of Blue Line/Go Ahead)

Drivers also are not allowed to wear identifiable (ie Blue Line) uniform and wear plain red tops

If they really thought the service was a good idea perhaps they should run a regular service on the route concerned rather than adopt the sour grapes attitude of 'we cannot and do not want to run the service and we are not going to let you run it either

"IF" you are a driver and not Blue Star management, then you should be ashamed of your employers, for the cringeworthy tactis that your corporate monster is employing!

And as for attacking Taz in a perseonal way, YOU should be ashamed of yourself.

Phil and his TEAM are doing a grand job of re-introducing a customer friendly & customer focused company back onto the South Coast. Something Wilts & Dorset, SBL and Southern Vectis used to be until Go-Ahead got their mucky paws on these three once great and proud companies.

Leave VELVET alone, stop your slanderous attacks on its staff and watch VELVET go from strengh to strength. With all the backing of the general public, and the tremendous TEAM that Phil has at his disposal i dont think it will be long before Bluestar/Beep Bus whatever you want to call yourself, will be heading out of Eastleigh.

"work of fiction" seems to overlook the fact that Bluestar themselves ran service B to Boyatt Wood before abandoning it along with several others earlier this year, due to poor support. (Hardly surprising since routes and timetables changed every few weeks, buses rarely turned up and, if they did, they seemed to run to some sort of random timetable known only to the drivers).

Now a 'competitor' has turned up on a route that Bluestar didn't want to run any more, suddenly it's worth it after all.

How wonderful is this muddled thinking of Blustar! They've taken the bully-boy tactics of a city centre route and transferred them to a sleepy backwater of Eastleigh. You just know that when they do see off Black Velvet, they'll again abandon this route because they'll find it unprofitable.

Most businesses think only of maximising revenue. Bluestar seems to think only of trumping its previous incompetences.

No, im not Bluestar management, im a driver who believes in giving the best service to our customers - as do the vast majority of Bluestar drivers.

Unfortunately we are let down by a small minority who give us all and the company a bad name.

I fully support the company that I work for and find the management/superviso

rs very fair and helpful. You will probably find that the majority of drivers posting on here are the minority who have the customer care skills of 'hitler' and should probably find a job more suited to their personallity - rather than dragging the rest of us down with them.
Thanks for clearing that up 'work of fiction'

As a Blue Line driver I fully support Black Velvet in all they are trying to do. They have good drivers who care about their passengers and they are a fledgling company trying to do whats right and that is to give a good high quality service to those passengers.

The vast majority of Blue line drivers also want Blue line to do well and to give a good service but they are being worn down by managements constant bullying and scare tactics.

You may say if I don't like Blue line why don't I leave? I have been here for many years and have no wish to leave as I will not be bullied into quitting my job. However I will stand up for what I believe is right in this world and will not be bullied into submission by a management that has no idea how to run a bus company or a large group of employees.

Very well said.

As I have already said I am a Blue line driver but Phil and Taz have my support. Well done guys keep up the good work and show Blue line management what you are made of.

Just one thing though please remember its not us drivers who want a war its the inexperienced blue line management :-)

Whatever bus company gives the best service, the routes required to get from A to B, after all, the years gone by there was an Inspector who came on board and checked timing etc., time tables were adhered to and everything was aimed to get the worker to their destination, the patients put at the door of whatever hospital they needed. The bus driver, the bus conductors (who probably) cursed all this regime nevertheless knew where they were. It was an administration to be proud of. Unfortunately, there appears to be a cavalier attutude by the Management and the poor employees never know if they have a job at the end of the day. I say to the Management 'sling your hook' let responsible firms take over. This is not a child's toy railway you are playing with.

At least 'work of fiction' is partly right - route A currently Eastleigh/Hedge End/Botley (formerly Hamble)- does not go go to Southampton ! However this route was given up by Blue Line and is now run commercially by Velvet. Perhaps Blue Line were waiting for a huge subsidy to run the route as they have done with the 19 route around Thornhill (now partly restored at great expense to the council)

He also overlooks that Velvet were giving a DIRECT service (admittedly not a regular service) between Boyatt Wood and Velmore to Southampton where NO service existed before. It is of course true that at any route into eg Eastleigh or Southampton has to run along corridors that are already bus routes

Of course Blue Line have every right to react to competition but if they see route B as competition the BL boss is probably looking at it through an alcohol fuelled haze.

Please remind all Blue Line passengers waiting for their bus that does not turn up that 2 busses and drivers are tied up in this 'war' and might be better used in ensuring their existing services improve their reliability

At the end of the day, in my opinion, BlueStar are in the wrong. The points that Mr. Wickham made are invalid.

BlueStar took their 'Red Rocket' B away from all of us in Boyatt Wood in February. Bluestar used the excuse that the area is still widely covered by the E service from Winchester. I do not feel that this is the case. My friends grandmother who is very elderly lives in Bosville which was left without a bus service at all. When we heard that Velvet were starting up the B service again, including journeys to and from Southampton, we were very pleased. Although it is not the most frequent service, it has restored some vital links in the area. I think that velvets initiative has been completely abused by BlueStar. They obviously KNOW that the public will have a bad reaction to what they are doing so this is why they are trying to cover up their identity. The buses have NOTHING on them that links them to BlueStar and they have even painted the buses red. At first, I didn't know that the beep b was run by BlueStar until i heard rumours and then the echo confirmed them. And saying that velvet are taking customers away?? The service isn't nearly as frequent as BlueStars es and cs. It's just an excuse to try and shut down Velvet before they get any bigger because Velvet do a far better job than Bluestar do.

I have travelled on both buses, the beep and velvet. Last week, it ran free so i used beep. The drivers were not nearly as friendly as when i travelled on velvet. I have never EVER had drivers as friendly as the ones on velvet. They are also very respectively presented in a shirt and tie, unlike the cheap red polo shirts of the beep bus drivers.

Overall, come on velvet! keep it up!

I'm also a Blue Star Driver, and as my colleague states most of us 95% support Phil & Taz 100%. We the drivers at Blue Star try to give 100% however it's not easy when we have an ailing fleet and management that seems more interested in upsetting it's workforce with ridiculous rules etc, The only Bus going on is between management & Drivers.Gone are the days when morale was good ( Never Known it so low since I've been a driver) and phil was in charge. If we could only all buy Go Ahead out and reapoint Phil as M.D we'd be able to give South Hampshire a decent Bus Service.

No matter what the company is called, it is run in the interests of 'profit'. Which does not equate to 'public transport'. Cheers Mrs Thatch,

Thanks 'Echo' minder and censor for chucking my comment of Sunday evening off the Bus. I am a total bus user (I have never had a car in my life) and always use the buses on my oft visits to the city. I would still query the roadworthyness of the Blue Star fleet, they are so uncomfortable and, after heart surgery, are a pain to ride in even after five years. When they have run Black Velvet off the road the service will be withdrawn again and potential passengers will be left stranded again. I see no rudeness or disrespect in this or last evenings' comment, more a matter of fact, so let it stet....

I would rather transport be managed by the private sector driven by profit rather than incompetent politicians driven by egos. Last time I checked no bus company made what could be termed obscene profits.

In the words of Alannah Myles "Black Velvet is a new religion that will bring you to your knees", you'd better start believing Mr Wickham because this is the future.

KNEEL down at the altar of this new philosophy or be HAMMered! Black Velvet is a TIGER that has emerged from the undergrowth.

It's time for Bluestar to put down their CRAYONS and end this childish spat.

One final point for Bluestar. Rename your service as a "D" for DOG - this service is BARKING!
