VILLAGERS near Winchester were going to the polls today in a city council by-election.

Voters in Colden Common and Twyford are heading for the polling station because of the resignation of Jim Wagner who has returned to his native USA.

The three candidates are: Nicholas Carr (Labour); Sue Evershed, (Conservative) and Daryl Henry (Liberal Democrat).

In May 2007, Mr Wagner polled 1,280 votes to defeat Ms Evershed who got 838. Labour’s Elaine Fullaway polled 53.

The result will not affect the balance of power on the Conservative-controlled council. They currently have 29 councillors; the Lib Dems have 24, whilst the Independents have three and Labour, one.
