A HAMPSHIRE health boss has hit out at a watchdog that slated his healthcare trust.

The Audit Commission branded Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust “inadequate” and among the worst performing financial managers in the country.

The news comes only weeks after the trust was revealed to have paid off two highly-paid managers with six-figure settlements.

Chief executive Martin Wakeley said: “We are very disappointed but it should be put in perspective.

“The rating is unwarranted.

We were asked for a medium term financial plan at a time when our f i n a n c e d i r e c t o r had been in the post for a matter of weeks. I am pleased to say that this has now been done and shows a bright financial future for this trust.

“Not only is the period covered now historic (April 2007- March 2008), but it was also one of immense change. There were new members of the trust board (including chairman, chief executive and finance director) and the top priority of the board in this year was to drive up the quality of care.

“The investment, in terms of finance and energy, has clearly paid off. Waiting times are down, the cleanliness standards are higher than ever and our infection rates are some of the lowest in the country.”

The trust argues that it actually has a sound financial record, breaking even in the last two financial years.

how can this man justify the pay-offs to the two people in question when they are STILL working for the NHS,and i will state again people are refused treatment due to "lottery post codes" i thought the NHS was supposed to help people, all it seems to do is create management posts pay over the top salaries to these vultures and then give them a massive handout.GIVE IT TO THE NURSES AND TREAT THE SICK !!!!!!

The audit commission know what an inadequate trust looks like. Its all very well saying it was a particular time, but that sounds like an admission that indeed there was 'inadequate' financial management for an extended period. And whose responsibility is it to ensure senior posts are properly covered? Oh but thanks to this PR puff piece we know they have finally got around to doing their jobs properly. I guess that 6-figure salary must really give you the encouragement - eventually.
