A HAMPSHIRE man is facing a jail term after admitting causing the deaths of two Southampton women in a head-on road smash.

Mark Reed has admitted falling asleep at the wheel of his car and crashing into a car containing Beryl Driscoll and Maureen Cox.

Reed, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving on the A30 near Basingstoke on January 31 this year.

He appeared at Winchester Crown Court yesterday for a five-minute hearing, wearing glasses and smartly dressed in a dark pinstriped suit with white shirt and dark silk tie.

Ms Cox, 59, and her mother, Ms Driscoll, 79, who both lived in Shirley, were in a blue Renault Clio at Kempshott when Reed’s 05-registration Renault Laguna slammed into their vehicle.

Judge Thomas Longbotham said the basis of plea was that Reed “must have fallen asleep at the wheel”. The judge imposed an interim driving ban and ordered Reed to surrender his licence within 24 hours.

He told Reed: “You have pleaded guilty to two charges which makes it inevitable in my judgement there will be a sentence of imprisonment.”

Sentencing will be at Winchester on Friday, November 7. Reed was remanded on conditional bail.

The court heard that Reed, of Cotswold Close, Buckskin, was a man of good character.

Ms Cox was a well-known figure in Southampton dance circles, running Emjay’s dance school from the Methodist Church Hall in Swaythling.

On the Daily Echo website many of her students recounted her inspirational teaching and charismatic leadership.

No doubt it will be a pathetic and small sentence, and halved by good behaviour and parole.
I would like to see the time when these offences are really taken seriously, a charge of manslaugher, and a minimum sentence of at least 15 years.
After all, we are talking of loss of lives, and the affect it has on many other people.

How could he manage to smile after this tragic case. Even if it was an accident, that grin will hurt the families of the victims. Go to jail and rot for the maximum term possible.

Dictionary definition of Manslaughter: "The unlawful killing of one human by another without express or implied intent to do injury." What makes this any different?

The nice lads in prison will wipe that smile of his face. Could he not at least show some remorse for taking 2 lives?

Does seem to me, having done photography for years myself, that all you need is to capture one split second moment and the story changes dramatically.

I'm not saying its the case here, but, a polite smile and extending your right hand to shake your solicitors hand could be taken as swaggering and laughing.

I knew a guy who had done a stretch for car theft, and from what he used to say its a possibility :-0

How dare he show his face. Maureen and Beryl were wonderful women and their families are devastated. He deserves the longest jail sentence for murder. This is what he has done and should be sentenced to serve life. He has taken the lives not only of Maureen and Beryl, but their families and devoted friends and also the dance students who can't carry on until they know he is behind bars for a long long time!!!Let's hope somebody does something like this to him or his family and see how they like it.

It's a shame that you all judge this guy as an evil murderer when he has no prior criminal record and has never been in trouble with the law, no details like this will ever come to light of course. Known the guy a while now and I know what it has been doing to him.

It was a tragic accident and I feel for those involved I really do but when a barristers daughter can get away with killing somebody whilst using her mobile phone as has happened in the same town recently, how can this guy get a tougher judgement.

I know it will be a sad time for the dead womans families but his poor wife will be having their first baby soon and it will be a hard time for her to cope especially with Christmas round the corner. I'm sure none of you care about that will you are happy slinging mud around.

I watch daily a young lady's heart breaking because she has lost her mum & nan in the same accident, I feel that smiling in a photo looks like he is very happy with what he has done, and I can't believe that you can fall asleep coming around a roundabout! but as mentioned above he will get to see his family again. When he comes out of prison he will see his wife and new baby, but will have to cope with this for the rest of his life, but unfortunately this young lady's mum & nan will never get to see her get married and have babies of her own he might want to think about that. When you have lost your mum it is the worst feeling in the world and perhaps when he has lost someone special he will understand how the family feel.

Only Mark Reed knows the true cause of the crash, whether it was him falling asleep at the wheel as stated, or other.

I think the hardest part for the Family to accept is how sudden the lives of two loved ones were taken away from them. Not being able to have one last cuddle, No opportunity to say goodbye, Not being able to say I love you or to tell them that one thing you now wished you could....

I really hope Mr Reed realises the true scale of his actions on that fatefull day and the heartache it has caused the Family since.

Guys
Believe me Mark deals with this every day, the photo is sadly not reflective of how hard he is trying to deal with what happened and I understand for every message I post commenting on how Mark is a good person who has been involved in something tragic there will be a dozen posts talking about the poor victims and having lost family I do understand.

I'm not defending what he did as I wasn't there and only know his version, I'm just trying to put across that he is a good person and does not deserve some of the mailicious comments that have been said here.

Sadly this paper has not chosen to report on a tragic accident but has villified Mark.

Right first things first, i am appalled and disgusted at some of the comments made on here about this guy and this story! no one has the right to say "i hope he gets put into a cell with a big guy called bubba!" and "hope the nice lads in prison wipe that smile off his face!" what a load of tosh! no one knows what or who mark is looking at on that picture he could be saying goodbye to a family member or might be showing a bit of relief that he has got through a nerve racking day! at the end of the day that does not look like a smile but more of a nervous grin! i know this guy and ive even had my ups and downs with him but i feel every need to defend him! this is outrageous! how can you people say stuff like that when you dont even know the guy, and most of all when you dont even know the facts of the case and why he has pleaded guilty!!!! one, only he knows what happened to him that day. he may have fallen asleep he may have blacked out who knows but him, but at the same time this could happen to absolutly anyone! every time you get into a car there is a 50/50 chance you could have an accident but no one thinks about that when they put it into first and drive. because driving is part of everyday life! and unfortunatly for mrs cox and mrs driscoll and mark it happened to them. what if it was the other way around? what if it was one of you that done it? what if it was someone close to you that was in marks place?! would you be saying these things now? no! so keep it shut because karma can come round and bite you in the backside and then you could face living in a cell with a big guy called bubba and read evil comments like these on the internet and you will then feel exactly the same as him! i will tell you now mark puts on a face to stop people from asking questions to make it look like hes getting on with life because he has too! life goes on! harsh to say but it does. he has got a wife who is expecting and shes got to go through everything hard about having a baby by herself! yes he will get to see them again and the families of the ones whos lives were lost wont be able to see their loved ones but that day and that moment has changed his life dramatically and he has to deal with that every minute of every day! and that is a burden to live with and if he can make it through the tough times thinking about it i will take my hat off to him! you cant say things like that to someone of a case like this! if he was drink driving or trying to over take the lorry in front and driving wrecklessly then yes say them, say murderers should be shot, say rapist should be hung but not stuff like that when its an unintended situation that could happen to any body! dont judge a book by its cover! because all though ive had my differences with him he is a generally nice guy and if he could change what happened on that day i tell you he would! but this could happen to anyone and i feel for the families of these ladies and sorry for there loss. but comments that have been posted on this story are **** right rude, disrespectful, childish and heartless! oh and one more thing it didnt happen on a roundabout but on a straight road so get your facts right before you start opening your mouth! everybody get the facts right before opening your mouth! families sorry for your loss!

What happened is so absolutely and totally incredibly sad for everyone. A split second and everything changed irrevocably. No words can really express the tragedy from either side of the equation.

Couple of things i want to say as the nephew of Maureen. Someone mentioned about him being in sales yet I heard that he is a mechanic, I guess dressing up in a smart suit and tie helps give a better impression, wether it be a true reflection or not is another matter.. funny how people feel the need to make themselves out to a different character than they are when they are 'innocent'. also 'dontknowwhoheis' you say 'if he was trying to over take the lorry in front and driving wrecklessly then yes say them' but didnt he pull out from behind to overtake the lorry in front on a short stretch in between two roundabouts? say no more........ I can imagine he isnt a nasty piece of work and he probably does feel very bad about the whole thing but anyone who can kill two people on such a small stretch of road with roadabouts only a couple of yards apart must have been driving wrecklessly....
