A HAMPSHIRE man is facing a jail term after admitting causing the deaths of two Southampton women in a head-on road smash.
Mark Reed has admitted falling asleep at the wheel of his car and crashing into a car containing Beryl Driscoll and Maureen Cox.
Reed, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving on the A30 near Basingstoke on January 31 this year.
He appeared at Winchester Crown Court yesterday for a five-minute hearing, wearing glasses and smartly dressed in a dark pinstriped suit with white shirt and dark silk tie.
Ms Cox, 59, and her mother, Ms Driscoll, 79, who both lived in Shirley, were in a blue Renault Clio at Kempshott when Reed’s 05-registration Renault Laguna slammed into their vehicle.
Judge Thomas Longbotham said the basis of plea was that Reed “must have fallen asleep at the wheel”. The judge imposed an interim driving ban and ordered Reed to surrender his licence within 24 hours.
He told Reed: “You have pleaded guilty to two charges which makes it inevitable in my judgement there will be a sentence of imprisonment.”
Sentencing will be at Winchester on Friday, November 7. Reed was remanded on conditional bail.
The court heard that Reed, of Cotswold Close, Buckskin, was a man of good character.
Ms Cox was a well-known figure in Southampton dance circles, running Emjay’s dance school from the Methodist Church Hall in Swaythling.
On the Daily Echo website many of her students recounted her inspirational teaching and charismatic leadership.

The nice lads in prison will wipe that smile of his face. Could he not at least show some remorse for taking 2 lives?

How dare he show his face. Maureen and Beryl were wonderful women and their families are devastated. He deserves the longest jail sentence for murder. This is what he has done and should be sentenced to serve life. He has taken the lives not only of Maureen and Beryl, but their families and devoted friends and also the dance students who can't carry on until they know he is behind bars for a long long time!!!Let's hope somebody does something like this to him or his family and see how they like it.

It's a shame that you all judge this guy as an evil murderer when he has no prior criminal record and has never been in trouble with the law, no details like this will ever come to light of course. Known the guy a while now and I know what it has been doing to him.
It was a tragic accident and I feel for those involved I really do but when a barristers daughter can get away with killing somebody whilst using her mobile phone as has happened in the same town recently, how can this guy get a tougher judgement.
I know it will be a sad time for the dead womans families but his poor wife will be having their first baby soon and it will be a hard time for her to cope especially with Christmas round the corner. I'm sure none of you care about that will you are happy slinging mud around.

I would like to see the time when these offences are really taken seriously, a charge of manslaugher, and a minimum sentence of at least 15 years.
After all, we are talking of loss of lives, and the affect it has on many other people.
