THE TURF has been broken on the site of the new police headquarters for Southampton.
This marks the start of work on the eight-storey landmark building at the city’s Southern Road that will be the base for 535 staff.
The new home for the police will bring more facilities together under the one roof and include the largest custody unit in the county with 42 cells.
The work will be completed in Autumn 2010 when it will replace the current Southampton Central Police Station.
The location for the new HQ was chosen because it is easy to find and close to the city centre and the courts.
The other stations at Shirley, Portswood and Bitterne will remain open.
Speaking at Friday’s ceremony Hampshire Police Authority chairman councilor Jacqui Rayment said: “This ceremony marks the latest phase of what is one of the biggest projects we have ever undertaken.
“Once completed this building will include the biggest custody facility in the county, a modern working environment for our officers and staff and provide a focal point for policing in the city.
“This is an exciting and challenging time for us.”
The ceremony was one of the last public engagement for the force’s chief constable Paul Kernaghan who retires on Wednesday.
The new building is being funded by Hampshire Police Authority.
