MOTOR giant Ford has confirmed that its Southampton's plant will be shutting down for a month over Christmas forcing workers to survive on basic pay.

Worried staff say the loss of allowances could cost them as much as £300.

The staggered shutdown will see the plant completely locked down from December 5 to January 5.

The first stage of production will be closed down on December 3, with body shop and paint shop shutting on December 4 and the trim department finishing on December 5.

On reopening, the first stage production will start on January 6, body shop and paint shop will return on January 7 and trim will be back on December 8.

A Ford spokesman told the Daily Echo the company expected to return to a five-day-week from January 12.

However, workers believe there will be more "down days" with the possibility of a three-day-week in the future.

A Ford spokesman said: "This decision was made at a meeting yesterday as a direct result of a drop in demand for the Transit. All the time we spend having Transit sitting around unsold it is costing us money."

Liberal democrat MP for Romsey Sandra Gidley said: "This is sad news for the city's Ford workers, many of whom will feel short-changed - especially with Christmas fast approaching.

"I only hope that short-term painful actions action like these will allow Ford to weather these harsh global economic times.

"Of course, I and my parliamentary colleagues will continue to do all we can to help Ford and their workers, so that the company can commit to a long-term future in Southampton."

The announcement by Ford comes a week after the Daily Echo exclusively reported workers' fears that this shutdown was on the cards.

Will they be turning up and producing Transits in protest, as a sort-of reverse strike?

I daresay I will be able to manage on basic pay as will most of the 1100 Ford workers on site - perhaps we will be a bit more careful with our spending.

However there are 100 or so Hamton contractors on site who have just been told they will get £100 for the first week then NOTHING for the following three.

And I wonder how the others will cope.

What about the 'Magna' seat factory at Wide lane who supply us with seats - will they get lay off pay?
What about the drivers and Staff of 'W.E.Dean' who deliver parts to the plant? - parts and components many supplied by small companies throughout the country - what are they going to do?
Or 'Selecta' who run the canteen - they will be laid off as well.
They sell us hundreds of filled Rolls every week - I wonder what little Roll filling company in Southampton will be seeing a dramatic drop in Business just before Xmas.
Of course there must also be a bakery who will be baking thousands of rolls less and an industrial laundry will have 8,000 items less to clean and repair next month - perhaps they will have to let people go too?
Then there are the contractors who run the completed vans down to the Docks and the staff who work there - nothing for them to do for 4 weeks!
And I do hope the little newsagent on the corner where we buy our papers and ciggies from will still be there in January.

What about all these people?
Are they all 'lucky 8astards'too?

Get a life Militant - the story and my response was specific to Ford workers; there are thousands upon thousands of workers facing an uncertain future (me included) and Ford workers shouting about a £300 loss of allowance for a month is frankly laughable.

My comiserations to the contract workers who will lose out, but for the full timers at Fords a month off on basic pay at £11+ per hour isnt half bad in my book! It might show certain people there whats its really like to have to tighten the belt!

Bar Stewards indeed Mr Sway, and the lazy sods will still take a sicky on Fridays, force of habit.

That's probably what you do at your place of work throw a sicky on a Friday like a lot of lazy 8astards in lots of industry these days. But I can confirm my Husband has not thrown a sicky nor a day off in over 18 years employed at Fords. Perhaps this happen in 1960/1970's but certainly not since if you what to keep a job.
