DRIVERS were facing delays this afternoon after a recovery lorry got jammed under a bridge.

The lorry, carrying a horse box, became trapped under the railway bridge close to Ampress Industrial Estate.

Motorists reported big delays with queues both in and out of Lymington on the A337 while they try and negotiate the vehicle.

It is not only truck drivers who do not know the extent of their vehicles. In this reported case there may be an excuse due to the geography of the road.
However, I am amazed sometimes by drivers of cars who would appear to have no idea of the length or width of their vehicles, particularly when parking.

thats a good idea and some times work,
this location is a little bit harder than that the angle changes, what you got here is a baily type bridge at the bottom of the hill, they would of needed to take the air out of the pillows and lock the brakes so they dont come on

Cue old gag:

Lorry gets stuck in Lymington. Cop cars pull up and the driver sticks his head out the cab

"Right -where do you want this bridge delivered to?"

I doubt whether this is the bridge over the A337 - it is more likely to be the much smaller bridge that once gave access to the HQ of Wellworthy, whose piston factory once graced the site. Interestingly there was also once a railway halt for Ampress Works which is still extant. Has anyone yet proposed reopening the halt now that the site is being redeveloped? You could even call the new station "Boldre"!

Hmm, was this Satnav related?

After extensive research I have concluded that the truck became wedged under the ONLY railway bridge across the A337 at Lymington and Andy would be better off airing his knowledge of Locks Heath which he may know more about.

Don't want to start a local war, but isn't the bridge over the A337 at the place that was the "Wellworthy" stop called Ampress Works Halt near Ampress Lane one of the same ? That would make Andy and Derek both right, unless there has been major re-development altering the railway line and A337. I would be interested to know, seriously.

Yes, they are both right. I worked at both Brockenhurst and Lymington stations. Ampress was a Halt, meaning a request stop between stations. In order to be able to board or alight from a train you had to make the request to the staff at one or the other of the stations.
The site now houses Lymington hospital among other things but I have no idea as to whether Ampress can still be used as a request stop or whether the short narrow alighting/boarding dais is even still there.
It was a blooming cold place to stand in winter. I remember that.

Read the references made to two bridges, the bridge over the A-337 and then the smaller bridge 'to the old Wellworthy site'. Drive along the road from Brock to Lymington and you'll find only one bridge and that's the only one that's ever been there. There is no other bridge on the road to jam a truck under.

Derek of Dibden Purlieu, that is true, there is only the one bridge, and its a baily bridge at the bottom of the hill has you go into lymington, the other 2 bridges in the area are on different roads.
