TRAIN passengers are facing delays after a railway bridge in the New Forest was closed for an emergency inspection.

The bridge between Brockenhurst and Sway was closed just before 3pm after track engineers spotted 'loose masonry' on the bridge which runs over a road.

South West Trains were forced to cancel some services as they waited for the bridge to reopen at 4pm.

Trains travelling between Southampton and Bournemouth are now expected to be delayed throughout the evening as a 20mph speed restriction is put in place.

A spokeswoman for South West Trains said repair work to the bridge will be completed by Thursday morning and once the tailbacks clear tonight trains will unlikely face any further disruption as drivers will only have to slow down over a short area of track.
