Ford's Swaythling Transit plant is losing money

THE SOUTHAMPTON plant is losing money and things have to change.

This was the bombshell the head of Ford Europe John Fleming delivered when he met with MPs for top-level talks about the future of the company today.

He said jobs were "very likely" to go but the company hoped that because of the age structure of the workforce it would be through voluntary redundancies, retraining and natural attrition.

He reiterated Ford's claim that it was committed to a long-term future in the city but added the only way he could see that being possible was by slashing output from 75,000 vehicles to just 35,000 chassis cabs and exporting production of the iconic Transit to Turkey.

He went on to say the retooling costs were high, the factory was running at a loss and things were made worse by the global downturn.

Liberal Democrat MP for Romsey, Sandra Gidley, said: "I was surprised at how direct he was and he told us that company could not expect anything more from the Southampton workers whose hard work they valued.

"We now have a much better understanding with Ford and the bosses know that we will do whatever we can to save jobs. He said the figures on job losses were being worked out but they hoped to retrain some employees and would do all they could to avoid redundancies."

Lib Dem MP for Eastleigh , Chris Huhne, said: "He has given a guarantee that the company will continue to have a presence at Swaythling and at least half the 1,100 jobs will be saved.

"I asked what chance there was that the company's American management would reject his plan and he told us that had never happened in the past."

Labour MP for Southampton Test, Alan Whitehead, said: “This is limited good news, insofar as there will definitely still be a Ford plant operating to some extent after 2011 but it is far cry from the production levels of the plant in the past.

“I hope over the next month or so we can work with Ford and the Government to see how this guarantee can be built on to protect as many jobs in Southampton as possible.”

A Ford spokesman said the company would not be commenting on today's meetings with unions this morning and MPs this afternoon but an employee bulletin would be sent out in a few days.

Liberal Democrat MP for Romsey, Sandra Gidley, needs to remember ford europe and uk it being told what to do and say by ford usa head office, and what they need to do now is go to EEC and UK parlament and get the anti flooding laws to put on extra import tax on any ford vehcile's that not produce in europe.and put the threat there to turn the transit plant into a co-op,mps need to learn not to hold on to the ball, and need to learn how to throw the ball back in to there court, give them some thing to think about.

I hope Sir John was able to back up his assertion that The Ford plant is 'losing money' with evidence and our MP's simply did not accept his claim at face value.
Ford insist on presenting the £1000 per van cost differential between Southampton and Turkey as a loss.
The reality is, by our reckoning, that we are making £300 million a year PROFIT.
Who is right?
Well, if Ford will agree 'open the books' for our MP's and Union reps then we can all find out.
I mean, how will cutting production in half help if the plant is unprofitable?
Yes, it's true wages are lower in Turkey and Eastern Europe but if thats the only yardstick we measure Industrial efficency by, then every factory and business here is 'losing money' by remaining in the UK.
We should close the lot and send all manufacturing jobs abroad immediately.
Meanwhile both Ford and GM are asking the government for tax concessions to boost flagging sales.
There should be NO bailout and NO tax concessions without Job gurantees.
British tax payers money should be used to support British jobs not corporate profit.
We are not going to accept the loss of 1100 well paid manufacturing jobs and call it a Victory because they are going to be replaced with 400 low paid jobs.
I fail to see the 'limited good news' Alan Whitehead is referring to.
We thought he was going to fight for our jobs and he allowed himself to be duped.
We will fight any attempt to transfer profitable buisness and well paid employment abroad.

come on Militant Ford Worker have you not learn yet, this governmet is a wolf in sheep clothing, they dont care about manufacturing jobs, they cant see what they are doing, because they are brainwashed and can only think like a tory and only look short term, and never long term, in the end our imports will to great over our exports, that it reduce this country to a 3rd rate country.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!

The threat of strikes has long hovered over the company and the staff paid over-inflated wages for too many years!

I mean, why should a tyre fitter at Kwik fit be paid HALF what a tyre fitter at Ford does?

You have brought this on yourselves...plain and simple.

the trouble with some of the people who write in here is they don't know what they are talking about as you can see by the tyre fitter comments you see there has not been a tyre fitter for a number of years like many operations at the plant they have either been taken over by a machine as in this case about 6 jobs lost or taken over by contractors who are on min wage and not treated very well and as for the over paid comments there was 5.ooo people working there in the 70's that number has reduced as you all know to 1100 but the pay rises for the past 10 to 15 years have only been 2% or 1/2% above inflation with no stikes in that time either ok you had a few walk outs but in some cases some sort of action is required like recent events
