Picture diary by mum at Lapland row attraction

A HAMPSHIRE mum has described the New Forest Lapland Christmas attraction as “disgusting” and a “joke”.

Grace Tyrell from Fareham visited the festive theme park which promises to ‘Make Christmas dreams come true for children of all ages’ with her six-year-old daughter and husband, along with some friends.

Cables and tyres at the New Forest Christmas wonderland

Together they paid £150 to visit the attraction which left them queuing in freezing cold temperatures and facing health and safety concerns with overflowing toilets and food and rubbish littering the grounds.

Mrs Tyrell said: “Like all other visitors, are completely disgusted, especially given the wasted £150 spent by us at this time of year.

“This was disorganised chaos with hardly any staff available to help or direct us to the event (and certainly not Seamus the Elf advertised on the website.”

Mrs Tyrell was so outraged by the park that she took photos of the attraction and sent them in to the Daily Echo.

“We queued for two hours in the freezing cold for two minutes with Santa, by which time many people had given up and left. I could not bring myself to leave the queue as my six-year-old would have been so disappointed to miss Santa.

“There were no staff helping the queue or talking to members of the public nor were there staff in the hut when we finally got in - Santa was by himself, with a toy deer on the floor and a fireplace set up.

“We had to queue outside the girls gift shop for a further 15 minutes to choose Santa's gift”

“Staff were grumbling to each other about all the complaints they were getting, and verbal abuse, the site was a mess and no one seemed to be cleaning up the left food and drinks which were lying around for the full two hours we queued for Santa.

Staff at the Wonderland

“Bread rolls etc all left in the rain for hours.

“My six year old commented that no one was tidying up the mess!”

“In the ladies toilets in the food area, we could not use the toilets as they were full to the seat, and my six-year-old daughter was disgusted and crying by this stage.

“There were lots of health and safety issues, and we took photos of the area when you first arrive where you view the huskies.

Nativity scene

“The children have to climb over muddy tyres and black cables- this definitely breaches health and safety rules.

“The nativity scene was a picture on a painted wall which was viewed from a distance and which had everyone we met, laughing.

“The entire day was a joke, and I know everyone else thought so.

“The crowds amused themselves as there were hardly any staff and they looked stressed out.

“One man came up and down the queues saying that the staff had just found out they would not get paid until 24 Dec, and they weren't being allowed breaks, so planned to walk out at close of play today, so we don't even know if it will open tomorrow.

“My six-year-old has been coughing since we left and lying wrapped up in blankets all evening. This is definitely an experience to forget, but we are very reluctant to lose £150 over this scam which should at least have been assessed by local authorities before it opened.”

My daughter and family went up North a few years ago to see similar rip off show - they pay quids and when they entered there were gnomes with shabby costumes, artificial snow, a backdrop of floppy hessian walling and a Father Xmas which, of course, was paid in the entrance fee for a 'gift'. They were shocked at the whole set-up. The gnomes just sat around not entertaining and just looked thoroughly fed up. Obviously, this 'show' will tour the country from Xmas to Xmas and not return to the venue of the previous year - cheap rip-off merchants and my daughter travelled 200 miles there and back to give the kids a thrill.

Why on earth do parents take their children to see Santa in November? It's on the same principal as putting up christmas lights on a house before December is upon us. By the time Christmas is here these poor children will either have passed out with the endless mounting excitement in the build up to the big day, or will be bored stiff with the whole experience before the 12 days of Christmas are even upon them. Take them to church instead.

I think this woman is ridiculous, £150 to see some second-rate Santa. . Surely she'll have enough bills to pay off after Christmas without further wasting her money. Whatever happened to the days of bringing your child to visit Santa at the local church fate and donating your money to people and causes that would actually appreciate a helping hand this Christmas? Furthermore, if this womans child was as upset as she claims, why did she have to further upset the situation by taking photographs and complaining to the local paper?

I tell you one thing that is a high class toy reindeer there, why are the kids so upset, can they not see that is a genuine reindeer - that must be worth the £150 on its own, it does look a pile of what was that stuff filling up the toilet.

This story has made my day. Spending £150 to visit a Santa, a month before xmas... and getting that in return. I've been laughing for the last 15 minutes.

My parents friend paid a small fortune to send her grandchildren to the real Lapland. At the end of the day what do people expect?

I was so close to booking this, and would have gone on Saturday. Most of the dates nearer to Christmas were sold out, and the website did promise something that would make a childs' year.
I'm so glad I was ill.

What is all the fuss about ?
Rip offs at Xmas are the norm, not the exception. A few bits of tinsel, sad apologies of Santas (at minimum wage), lots of plastic effigies and decorations, do not really add up to a jolly experience. Even the shops join in the annual con season.
Perhaps Xmas has totally lost its meaning.

I just feel sorry for all the people who have spent their hard-earned cash only to be ripped-off so heartlessly. The sad fact is we, as parents, like to see our kids happy and there are some very ruthless people out there who take advantage of this fact. I'll be taking my children to Lapland in Kent, which has been getting rave reviews. A lot further to travel but I think it will be well worth it.
