A GOVERNMENT planning expert will finally decide whether a new cut-price superstore will be built in Britain’s most affluent city.

As the credit crunch continues to bite, supermarket giant Aldi has continued its controversial fight to build a shop in Winchester.

Council planners have already rejected the proposals four times but the company is appealing and the final decision now rests with a Government planning inspector.

Aldi wants to build on the former Chimney’s site in Burnett Close, Weeke, next to the site where upmarket superstore Waitrose expects to open a store next September.

A previous application by Germanbased Aldi generated nearly 500 objecting, one of the highest figures recorded.

During the three-day public inquiry Trevor Ward, representing the city council, said the case was refused because of the unacceptable impact on the character of the area and unacceptable servicing arrangements for the site.

Councillor Richard Worrall, who represents the area, said: “No one has an objection to an Aldi in Winchester, just not on this site. What Aldi is proposing is too big for this space.”

But Aldi spokesman Neil Cameron argued: “This development will regenerate the site.

“We are providing a quality discount food store which the public can access on foot or via public transport.

“This will be of particular benefit as was communicated by the Weeke Tenants’ and Residents’ Association.”

We occasionally use an Aldi (and a Lidl) and the quality of the food is easily comparable with Asda and Tesco, but considerably cheaper. Why would anyone object?

Surely building an aldi in Winchister would devalue the local housing market.

Whatever next a down market store like Aldi...how dare they. Probably Waitrose are the biggest objectors with the residents who they are a cut above the rest with no thought for the hard up families who want to make their money go further.

I doubt Waitrose object; take a look at Romsey where Aldi and Waitrose are very close together. They each appeal to a different clientele and I can't see Waitrose worrying about an Aldi presence.

I grew up in weeke where my parents continue to live and i can guarantee that you'd be hard pressed to find someone on the estate who's up themselves (you'd find those kind of people in neighbouring Teg Down). Many people in weeke would benefit from an alternative such as aldi instead of waitrose.

Yet another example of the petty snobbery that blights Winchester. Aldi is no worse a store than Tesco, the produce is certainly of reasonable quality (although I do prefer Lidl).

This is on a par with The Great Lymington Argos Disaster. Utter nonsense.

Aldi should not be a problem to any other food outlet - I would like to meet the person who can shop ENTIRELY at Aldi - they do not have the stock. Some of their items are quite good but have you seen their veg - ugh! So you have to go to the market, but that does not get in what you need - so hence it is a visit to Sainsbury or Waitrose. Have you really the time to visit all these places if you are working?

This isn't being built for the people of Weeke is it.

It's location is convenient for the snobs in S Wonston who wouldn't have anything like this built in their neighborhood...
