Council chiefs refuse plans for gypsy Southampton site

SOUTHAMPTON: Tories accused of discrimination TORY council leaders in Southampton have been branded “discriminatory” after rejecting outright a series of proposals for new gypsy caravan pitches in the city.

Conservatives have told regional housing chiefs they should not be required to find any more space for gypsies and travellers in the city as any spare land available is needed to meet housing targets.

Gypsy chiefs have accused them of racial discrimination and ignoring Government requirements to find them pitches.

Hampshire is being asked to provide up to 205 permanent caravan spaces over the next ten years with between a third and half of the region’s quota being set for “travelling showpeople”, to live and store their fairground and circus equipment.

Southampton already has a permanent 14-space site at Kanes Hill, Botley Road, but was told it should find another ten to 14 pitches.

But Cabinet member for economic development, Councillor Royston Smith, said all four options offered by the South East England Regional Assembly were flawed as they took no account of the lack of availability of land.

He said: “We don’t have very much land and with a requirement of 16,300 additional homes we are going to struggle to accommodate that.”

He said the council was keen to work with neighbouring authorities to identify more suitable sites that meet with gypsy and traveller cultural preferences for sites at “rural locations”.

The Tories have already scrapped Labour and Lib Dem plans to build a controversial gypsy and traveller transit site at Monks Brook in Swaythling.

And they have agreed to spend £150,000 over the next three years to stop them using parks and green spaces to set up illegal campsites. The cash will be used to beef up boundaries and secure entrance points.

Basil Burton, chairman of Romany Rights Association, said: “They are trying to get rid of gypsies and travellers from the city.

“Saying you’ve got room for non-gypsies but not room for gypsies, if that is not racial discrimination I don’t know what is.”

He added: “We can’t help being born a gypsy, no more than Prince Charles was born the future king.”

There are already five council- run, permanent campsites in Hampshire providing around 100 spaces.

Portsmouth city chiefs, who were told to should find an extra eight and ten pitches, have voiced similar objections to Southampton.

Winchester City Council, which was told to find between 17 and 32 more pitches, is still considering its response.

Parasites.

Why dont they buy their own land, and property like the rest of us have to.
Why, becauses they call themselves travellers, do the expect special rights over the rest of the population.?

Why do they pull the discrimination card when things do not go their own way?
The council are doing what is best for the majority, not minority.

What a load of crap, gypsies are not a race these days, the only thing they have in common with each other is milking the system and putting nothing back into society. In this case...well done Tories for having the balls to challenge rather than pander to them.

Yep thats dead right and so they should as most of the travellers and gypsies are nothing more than an utter disgrace with little respect for anyone or anything......You reap what you sow

I do not agree with providing land for them but if we must as outlined by national governement why dont we give an amount of land on a short lease in the town somewhere not in a rural location.
Most people cannot affort to live in a rurral location so why should this land be given for free? Why not use a small area of the Vospers land for 5 years as this wont get built on for this time?

ask residents in Lordshill what they think of travellers. The mess, the intimidation and the general anti-social behaviour. The council have made a decision for the best in my opinion.

Very few of today's travellers have any Romany blood, unlike years ago. The vast majority are not even diddicoys (half-breeds)or Gypsies. They are just moving spoilers who ruin things for the residents in the places where they pitch up. For a change I agree with SOC. Any land that they need should be bought or rented in the same way as I had to rent and then buy my house. Unfortunately, the Government does not see it that way.

Years ago there was a very proud family of fairground people who owned the land on the main road into Totton. Alright, they were not my cup of tea, but the proudest people I knew. However, the powers that be eyed up their bit of land and WANTED it. I think they were offered land but I would appreciate what they, indeed, were offered. Can anyone advise me? The Proprietors were the warmest most charismatic people I have ever met. Having said that, what kind of ilk' eventually took over? These 'travellers' sorry, it is not with a capital 'T', are drop outs - unable to sustain a decent society.
Most of them are travelling because no society will entertain them. They are really the dregs of society.

The majority who come to Southampton are from the Republic of Ireland and come to work in the summer tarmacing drives. They are economic migrants at best.

Ho-oray for common sense! Well done to all the residents that campaigned to protect the area and vote-out the Liberals! I don't think council taxpayers should fund travellers way of life and certainly not at the huge sum proposed by the Lib/Lab administration.

I'm sure you'd be welcome if you were buying a property and contributing to society in a positive way, not expecting Southampton's taxpayers fund your way of life!

You know what, Basil? I fully agree. It isn't racial discrimination, and you don't know what is

The Kanes hill site provides not only caravan pitches but also purpose built 1 -bedroom accommodation with with private shower room and fitted kitchen. Oh and room to park at the front.
The whole site is always used as a dumping ground to get rid of their tarmac /rubble etc and of course, is regulary cleared by the Council.

I choose to live by the system, that is legally and pay my way towards society. As far as i'm concerned i, and people like me are the ones being discriminated against.

What a nasty lot of ignorant prejudice is pouring out here!
I've met Basil, and you couldn't find a more decent and pleasant bloke (He also played for saints at one time btw).
I've also been to a number of gypsy sites and I have never felt anything other than welcomed.
They love and look after their kids a **** sight better than the chav population.
I'd feel perfectly safe walking around a traveller site. I couldn't say the same thing about many estates in southampton!! where I'd feel threatened and on my guard.
proper wardened sites are whats needed. As for rubbish..look at some of our 'settled' council estates to see abandon cars and sofas in front gardens etc.
gyspies are picked on, because they are one of last groups of people that bigots can racially absue and get away with it.
