FIRE investigators have been called in following a blaze in Winchester last night.

Crews were called to tackle a small fire in a second floor bedsit on City Road, shortly before 9pm.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said because the cause of the blaze at 29 City Road was doubtful the service’s arson task force had been called in to investigate.

She added 12 fire fighters from Winchester were sent to the incident. No one was hurt in the blaze.

Police confirmed they arrested an 18-year-old male at the scene.

That's not fair, they weren't sleeping at all, some were playing pool and the rest were moonlighting down the taxi rank.

Sorry, you are right! I went off on one too soon, I did'nt consider those points but your right!

The others were getting ready to find another reason to convince us they are worth 35k a year. Salt of the earth-when they are not on strike! Thats when the real hero's (British army) take over.

Wait for it- its going to start soon......

I am absolutely astounded by the hostility and hatred some of the residents of Southampton show towards the fire department. Did you apply for a job with them ,and were turned down by them because of psychological problems?

I didn't apply for a job with them. But a lot of my colleagues, on return from Iraq (where they were REALLY putting their lives on the line) were made to cover for the firemen who were on strike for a 35 per cent pay rise. Those same guys then went back out to Iraq or Afghanistan having been awarded a 3.5 per cent pay rise by the Government, whilst the firemen were still whining about their pay and conditions (whilst moonlighting down the taxi rank when not sleeping or playing pool) They couldn't look the RN/Army/RAF guys in the face ... they daren't (cowards). So apart from the rare occassion when the yellow helmets have a horrid job to do, and yes I would be grateful if they pulled me alive from a car smash, I have absolutely no sympathy for them. They thought they could attract public sympathy in support of their pay claim, after the fall out of September 11th, erm ... that was in New York, nothing to do with our guys, and they got no support at all. It was a disgrace that they should use those terror attacks as a foundation to ask for 35 per cent more. So if I get a chance to offer some criticism about their militant behaviour at a time when guys were losing lives and limbs in service of our country, I will take it. Good Day!

BRIGHT SPARK.....I stand by every word you have said in that reply. I hope the people that always give the old "you won't say that when your house is on fire" think on!

Houses very rarely catch fire, we are all out doing our jobs and being a fireman is a job which allows you time to excercise and rest-as well as constant training for events that Might happen. When they do happen with the right training the fire service do a fine job which brings little danger to its staff..... no matter how well you are trained just try and avoid a sniper or suicide bomber!

I cannot and will not ever forgive the firemen for striking! They could work to rule etc etc

Thanks for such a well written post.

I would love a job that allows me to play pool all day and drink cans of coca cola. I might look into applying.

Bright Spark you really are a tw#t.
I am one of them Hampshire fire fighters, who back during the fire strikes was in the RAF got back from Iraq to cover the strikes and then back out to Iraq again. You give Ex servive and current serving guys and girls a bad name whith you crap attitude towards the emergency services. You really have no idea about the work we do. And yes i still have many good friends serving in the forces and fair play to them, they do deserve more money but thats not down to the fire service!!!!!!

Grow up!!!!!!
