So-called chavs ruin cruise for Ventura passengers

AN exclusive New Year’s cruise on board one of Southampton’s plushest liners was ruined by yobs who had bagged a last-minute bargain break.

Louts tried to set fire to a Christmas tree, a brawl broke out between two families, under-age youths were drunk and trouble flared in a bar on board the Ventura that left one person with a cut face.

The Captain of the ship, which was launched by Dame Helen Mirren in April last year, was also booed as he counted down to midnight on New Year’s Eve, while two people ended up spending a night in the liner’s cells and were later put ashore during an unplanned stop.

P&O now says it is bracing itself for a flood of complaints from returning passengers who had paid thousands for the Caribbean getaway on the £330m ship.

Some think the problem was sparked by “chav” holidaymakers grabbing a last-minute break after the passengers who had originally booked and paid a deposit pulled out because of the credit crunch.

One passenger, who paid £8,000 for four people, said she heard on board how some had paid as little as £900 for their ticket. She said: “I’ve been on 14 cruises now and this one was definitely the worst.”

A P&O spokesman said they would respond to any formal letters of complaint and investigate them immediately. They said children under 18 could only get alcohol on board through their parents or by bringing it onboard.

Symptomatic of the fall in values of UK society. I travel quite extensively and am appalled at the behaviour of a growing minority of my fellow passport holders who have no basic intelligence or manners.
Unfortunately the majority of well behaved UK citizens are tarred with the same brush as these uncontrollable, uncouth and unwelcome imbeciles.

These chavs should now be force to pay full price if they can't appreciate how lucky they were to even get on a new years cruise for such a cheep price.

I expect they have no real moral values at home anyway and the holiday was paid for by the tax-payer. Should have put them in a rubber dingy and set them out to sea.

Actually I expect them to go on a cheap package holiday to get drunk by a pool in Spain. Not get on a luxury cruise where you are supposed to dress well and act with a modicum of sophistication and, dare I say it, self respect.

It only takes a tiny minority to ruin it for everyone. Perhaps they should just leave a bucket of cold lager and a big plasma TV showing repeats of Jeremy Kyle in one corner of the cruise terminal deparature lounge. The chavs would all gather around it, and in the mean time the ship could quietly slipping its moorings and go without them.

This was awful behaviour by a small minority of people. If their sole intention was to go on a cruise and get drunk and behave in a rowdy manner, they could have joined the Royal Navy.

This has happened before, in our experience on Oriana and Ventura. I blame P&O for being so greedy in selling off the last few cabins at unbelievale prices which unfortunately does attract otherwise unlikely cruise go-ers. After our last experience it is unlikely that we will cruise with P&O again. I don't enjoy being intimidated by other passengers who think it's OK to 'reserve' a sun bed for hours on end and who also think it's acceptable to wander round the corridors at all hours of the night shouting and generally being a nuisance when most people are trying to sleep. It's a huge shame that these people don't know how to behave and I hope they are ashamed of themselves...althoug
h I somehow doubt it!

its all ways happening well now and again, fights breaking out between passengers is nothing new, the only thing different is that they are not crewed by british any more, when a fight broke out the crew would jump in and break it up, this you dont see any more, like you dont see a master at arms rating any more.

The tone of this article just shows what a classist society we live in. Bemoaning the fact that £900 tickets let in a lower class of passenger, without the necessary manners and decorum possessed by the more affluent.

Of course we never hear of stories of drunken or any other type anti-social behaviour being carried out by the rich despite Prince Harry doing his best to keep alive the image of the boorish toff.

Why blame P&O? If there are cabin's to be filled then fill them! If there are Cabin's left empty then your ticket price could be higher! If you go on holiday and there are rooms empty then Travel Agents will sell holidays at a cheaper rate. You can pay thousands for a holiday whether it be on a ship or go by plane, you will get some "low-life" that will ruin it. We only go to 5+* hotels and you get the odd person there but it's not the companies fault so don't blame P&O.

but Meandyou in a way it is p&o fault they want cheap labour and employ less staff, then you got to expect this to happen more often, like i said with a british crew they would of jump in to break up a fight between passengers and hand them over to the master of arms or the crosskeys petty officer.

Ears open P&O there is definitely a market here for a ship full of yobs who will drink you dry, fight and dont give a fig about the nationality on their passports. You could charter an old barge and make a fortune, dont miss the opportunity, after all money is everything nowadays dont worry about the decent hard working people that save all year to go on one of your Luxury?? cruises.Just fill the cabins, you know it makes sense.

I believe the Haven holidays were created for people like that..... free tokens in the Sun, fellow travellers in shell suits and stained trackie bottoms, endless choruses of oggi-oggi-oggi etc etc.

If I wasn't so thick I would be able to understand your last contradictory statement. You sound as though you may be a couple of Sea Harriers short of an ADEX yourself. A man short of a MOBEX perhaps or even a helo short of a DITCHEX, an RFA short of a RAS. Either way, you don't do tongue in cheek humour do you?

Oggi-oggi-oggi!
I take it that you haven't actually been on holiday since the 70s then Derek?
The last time i heard anyone say that i was on my space hopper wearing 'patch pockets'...and no doubt also a hand knitted tank top.

Southey,
Fights between passengers is relatively rare. Unfortunately bad behaviour, generally during school holidays, and fuelled by alcohol, is on the increase. Mainly due to the failure of parents to set an example or control their feral offspring.
P&O cruise ships are generally run by British Officers and Entertainment Staff are mainly Brits. Crew is mainly Indian but security is British or Gurkha.
The opportunity to go on a cruise is now not the prerogative of the rich (thank goodness)and is great value but the downside is it sucks in ne'er do wells' who have moved on from Blackpool/Magaluf & Faloraki

Brings back memories of a good old Aussie Christmas Cruise back in the good old days of Oriana (1) and Canberra in the early 80s. We carried security in the form of 4 NSW police who quickly sorted any trouble out!

Tut tut, Chavs of Britain. You are rapidly making it hard for us to add the word 'Great' in front of our nation's once-glorious name. A suggested remedy to the ill-doing of these vagabonds however might be for future ship designers to build less in the way of cabins as such, and more in the way of cells?!

That being the case I take back what I said in the post. I read so many anti service personnel rants that I thought you were one of them, apologies to a fellow retiree. Incidentally, couldn't do any of your EXercises, they would have been a bit damp at our depth. If you are interested in adding to your 'EX' list, here's a few that the civvies can understand if you want to get your point across. A p***k short of a DUREX, an a**h*le short of a SPANDEX. Fair Winds and a Following Sea.
