Driver who killed two in crash was doing a U-turn

A PENSIONER was doing a U-turn on a notorious Hampshire road when she killed a biker and his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

Motorcyclist Terry Stubbs and his pillion passenger, Channon Kervern, were riding along a 60mph stretch of the A326 near Hythe on August 23 when Ann Larke pulled out of a layby in her car and the crash happened.

Now Channon’s distraught mother has called for 73-year-old Larke to be jailed when she is sentenced next month after appearing in court to admit two charges of causing death by careless driving.

New Forest Magistrates’ Court heard how Larke pulled out of the lay-by and was turning round in the middle of the road.

Ruth Bowskill, prosecuting, said: “The defendant had taken her dog for a walk and had parked in a lay-by adjacent to the road.

“She pulled out and was performing a U-turn when the accident happened.

“Mr Stubbs and Channon both tragically died at the scene.”

Larke, of Tern Close, Hythe, was also hurt in the accident and was taken to hospital with what were initially thought to be life-threatening injuries, the court heard.

Iain Ross, in mitigation, said: “The defendant pulled out to go home and did not see the motorcycle until it was too late.

“She has been driving since 1959 and has a clean licence.

“This is a tragic case not only for the families of Channon and Mr Stubbs but also for the defendant, who hasn’t driven since.”

Crown court Ms Bowskill said Larke should be sentenced at Southampton Crown Court because of the seriousness of the case.

Her application was opposed by Mr Ross, who said the only aggravating feature was that more than one person was killed in the accident, but magistrates agreed to send the case to the crown court, where Larke will be sentenced on February 5.

After the hearing Channon’s mother Nicol said: “We’re happy with the guilty plea. We can’t believe the driver did what she did. I think she should be given a custodial sentence.”

The deaths of Mr Stubbs and Channon, both of Fawley, devastated their families and sent shockwaves through the Waterside community.

Channon had just finished at Cadland Primary School and was about to enrol at Hardley School and Sixth-Form. Friends said she was a “sweet and happy” girl who loved music.

Mr Stubbs and his stepdaughter are among eight people who have died on the A326 in the past four years.

Last November their relatives joined other residents at a public meeting organised by the Southampton Motor Action Group, which demanded major improvements to the road. Hampshire County Council has since closed the lay-y.

Members of the action group are however planning to stage a mass rally later this month when dozens of bikers will travel to the county council’s headquarters in Winchester to hand in a 1,000-name petition.

This is very sad for all those who knew both the victims, it's also very sad for the poor lady who caused this accident. I drive and used to use the same layby when walking my dog, thank fully i have never done a u-turn in this road. My thoughts go out to the family of those who where sadly killed, and to Mrs Larke. I am certain that she never got up on that fateful day and thought her actions would destroy so many lives. We all make silly stupid mistakes in our lives that's what makes us human. Please don't judge this woman on her one error of judgement, her actions are something that both she, her family and all those who know her, will have to live with for the rest of her life. I also hope that the judge is forgiving when he sentences her, after all there are far worse people walking our streets everyday.

she should be sentenced just like anybody else. age is no excuse.Im sure she didn't mean it but 2 people lost there lives because of her actions and she must pay the price for that, im sure if i were the driver i would be jailed. same law for all !

and its "motorcycle" action group not motor action group !

I wouldn't be so quick to correct other mistakes before checking your own.

2 people lost THEIR lives, not THERE lives.

Ever heard of capital letters or apostrophes?

I am sure that I will be crucified for saying so, but what on earth was an 11 year old girl doing on a motor bike anyway? I am sure that Mr Stubbs was a very careful and skillful rider, but he would therefore know better than anyone the risks involved for motorcyclists if an accident would ever occur, whoever would be to blame.

The guy from Basingstoke who fell asleep got 2 years for killing two, the girl who killed the cyclist (jumping a red light at the time) whilst texting got 4 year. A guy in London recently got 6+1/2 years for death by dangerous driving.
I'm not sure what sentence this lady deserves but whatever I'd like to see some consistency in sentences from the courts.

The person involved was a local person, why was she doing a u-turn on a busy road when there are roundabouts dotted along the A326. Surely an extra minute or 2 on the journey time is far better than risking a u-turn.

There is no law to say an 11 year old cant ride pillion, she made a grave mistake doing a u turn on such a road and i think that people over a certain age should have to retake their test.

I dont think commenting on the specifics of the group name warranted that little outburst about grammer!

I think thats kind of like shooting the messenger. If we all treated the roads with respect pillion passenger safety wouldnt be as much of a concern.

The issue here is the accident, not the motorcyclist.

The nature of my post was to point out that your correction of the Echo's error was a little hypocritical given the mistakes in your own post.

So, in the good old fashioned playground style..."You started it"!

I think to be fair you wound the guy up. If you REALLY feel that bad about the use of spelling you only have to look at your own post where you started a sentance witn "2" instead of "two".

Now lets stop this petty behaviour before the comments are all wiped away, this isnt the time and place ;-)

So your the echo's self appointed grammar police woman then ?

the difference is the echo reporter is being paid to be factually correct. Calling the group the "motor action group " was factually incorrect. My spelling and use of capitals is neither here nor there as i'm not being paid. every internet message board has its trolls "Denzil" and Grammar police like you, neither are genraly respected as they don't often contribute to the subject being debated. Your contribution to the topic was what ?

Custodial sentence sounds good to me. However, I don't think that it will stop other OAPs from driving beyond their sell by date.

Nothing to say she was "beyond a sell by date", as you so eloquently put it. :-o

It does sound more to do with a very bad habit she'd gotten into. He eyesight, reactions, etc all could have been fine - I'm sure it would have come out in court if she was unfit to drive.

I do find it ironic, Bad Boy. A lot of people say the elderly drive badly - yet if that was truly the case their insurance wouldnt be so cheap.
