Hospitals forced to spend millions to cater for fat patients

HOSPITALS in the south have been forced to spend millions of pounds on specialist beds and chairs for fat patients who are too heavy for standard equipment.

Bigger and stronger beds, trolleys and operating tables have added to the hidden cost of obesity to the region.

Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that two NHS trusts – Southampton University Hospitals and Isle Of Wight Primary Care Trust – spent a total of £4.1million on reinforced equipment to accommodate the clinically obese and overweight.

Southampton, which runs the Southampton General and the Princess Anne, spent £3.5million on 781 beds, £276,000 on 138 trolleys and more than £15,000 on chairs and operating tables. It paid a further £30,000 to hire additional equipment between 2006 and 2008.

Professor William Roche, medical director at Southam-pton University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are aware of the burden on individuals and public health from the current epidemic of obesity and the trust is working with its commissioners to implement plans to deal efficiently with the various challenges caused directly or indirectly by the problem.”

The Isle of Wight, which runs St Mary’s Hospital, spent £193,875 on five operating tables, £131,600 on 80 beds, £4,113 on a trolley and £2,468 on six chairs. Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare Trust did not provide figures.

Dont, Hospitals, feel forced to have the obese patients - has anyone felt that it may be society and the new Reform - the whole spectra of societies diatory needs. We are not what we are, but a scientific and disastrous analyisis of human consumption. How does one go back to basics - we have been scientifically quantified as 'Obese'. It gives another laboratory test - sorry we must have made a mistake. Where did we go wrong. We will name you fatties.

Interesting article - although it doesn't mention just how much the NHS has spent on illnesses related to smoking, illnesses related to drinking alcohol and the associated costs of accidents caused by drinking alcohol.
The article is just jumping on the bandwagon of "lets have a go at fat people" and has ignored the problems that have drained the NHS financially since 1948, let alone the toll on people who have to pick up the pieces - families as well as NHS staff.

Are you fat Airspirit?? You seem very keen to point the finger at smokers & drinkers. I think you'll find that "fat people" are just as much of a strain on the NHS and the rest of society, and being fat is not a disability its a choice just like smoking & drinking

I used to be quite friendly with a chap & his wife, he has a back complaint and was offered an operation as long as he lost a bit of weight first. So what do you think he did? He deliberately piled on the pounds so he didn't have to have the operation and now claims full disability living allowance with mobility allowance purely because he is a lazy good for nothing scrounging bloater who would rather sit on his back side all day screaming at his adopted kids (even more money scavenged of the social) and making a fortune out of the tax payer, the kids go without while he has nice holidays to America and runs two cars and not a single person works in the family.

I really have to point out that all is not what it seems - humans are only as good as supermarkets depict - we, the consumer is conditioned to read the 'best buys'. We are, when funds are lean, going to obtain the best bargains. We have become a slave to any propaganda, congratulations big grocery stores, you have won, for the moment. Put it on your wish list - "we will destroy the British down to earth healthy menu" Its easy, we are like putty in your hands!

That's **** Goard - there is no excuse for not eating a healthy balanced diet apart from ignorance and laziness - ignorance is hard to accept with so much out there about healthy choice etc so it really only comes down to laziness.
So, if people are too bloody lazy to treat their food intake seriously why should the taxpayer pick up the cost - obesity (without a medical problem) is completely avoidable and if folk allow themselves to become so, and thereby slowly commit suicide let them, just don't force me to pay their medical costs.

I never said that being fat is a disability - however, I think you will find that over the years the amount of money spent due to smoking - ie treating Lung Cancer, damage to blood vessels leading to amputations, or the treatment of alcoholism, and treating victims of road accidents or accidents in the home due to consumption of alcohol far outweighs (no pun intended) the current thoughts on being a fat society.
