FIREFIGHTERS rescued two pregnant cows that were trapped in a slurry pit at a Hampshire farm after walkers left a gate open.
The seven-month pregnant animals were found up to their necks in slurry at the farm in Ridge Lane, Ridge, near Ower this afternoon.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue’s specialist animal rescue team put harnesses around the 720kg dairy cow and 600kg heifer before lifting them to safety.
Animal Rescue Specialist, Jim Green, said: “It appears that walkers left a gate leading to a farmyard with a slurry pit open and these cows wandered in.
“The cows would not have recognised that the slurry was not solid ground and as a result they tried crossing it and became stuck.”
Watch Manager Green added: “Both cows are now safely back in their field and doing fine. However this incident does highlight the need for walkers to remember and always shut gates behind themselves.”
Firefighters were called at 1pm and the rescue operation was complete by 3.30pm.
