Jan Poortvliet steps down over Saints' poor home record

JAN Poortvliet sensationally quit as Saints boss last night.

The Dutchman walked out of St Mary’s after just eight months in the job and with Saints lying second from bottom in the Championship.

A club statement said he had taken the decision to stand down from his position in response to the team’s poor home form.

Academy director and reserve team manager Mark Wotte becomes head coach and will take charge of the team for Tuesday’s crunch trip to Norwich City.

It comes after a week of recriminations following the dismal 2-1 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers which made relegation to League One a real possibility.

The 53-year-old, who played for Holland in the 1978 World Cup finals, had been in charge at St Mary's since taking over from Nigel Pearson last May.

See today’s Daily Echo for reaction.

Poortvleit, you were out of your depth and had to go, but you should never have been appointed in the first place. You haven't resigned, you were sacked but in order to get your money, you have agreed to a PR stunt of you resigning. Lowe doesn't want to admit the the dutch "total-football" philisophy has been a failure No-one believes what comes out of the club anymore, but us fans aren't stupid. So, rupert is back, sacking managers as per his previous tender and now appoints again, within, another dutchman - will the dutch revolution work this time rupert - i doubt it....Lowe, time to go......

Having said all that, I shall still remain a Saints fan,in the football sense of course, no matter what league they are in...the first game I saw was when we were in the third division south. they were great days for football as a sport, but sadly that no longer seems to be the case.

12:49pm Sat 24 Jan 09

Another sad and embarrassing day for the Saints. Sad because we really have no hope of staying up. As Wotte has been on the coaching staff with Jan, I wonder if Wotte can make any positive change to SFC's position. As much as I hope Wotte can be a success I feel he wont.
Embarrassing because another Lowe experiment, that no other person in football would have contemplated, letting a manager who saved the team from Relegation go to another team and appoint a manager who is only proven at semi pro level. I know Pearson was "too expensive" although Lowe and the board see fit to take a wage which collectively is more than what Perason would have wanted. Lets not forget that this board are not full time as they are on the board or have interests in other companies so why do they need to take a wage??
If Lowe thinks that JP going will unite and appease the fans then his is seriously deluded. Lowe, follow JP's example and go now. Take your board with you. An investor cant invest in you, No self respecting manager will work for you, the fans dont like you, and you have cost this club more money over the years than you have ever invested into the club. Your intentions may have been good but you are still after 10 years, out of your depth. If you have any honour and if you care for SFC then go of your own accord and at least the fans may give you some respect for acknowledging your short comings.

Lowe did NOT sack JP. JP was DRIVEN OUT of his job by a minority of vocal "people". I'm not even going to call then "fans" or "supporters" as they are only intent of destroying our club.

As JP says, NOW is the time to get behind the players, Lowe and the rest of SFC and show your SUPPORT.

Let the "nay sayers" know that they aren't welcome at out club and we'll be fine. Let them drive a wedge between the supporters and the team and the only thing we can do is fair..

at last! although every time you hear that lowe has given his manager his full confidence, you know it is only a matter of days before they "mysteriously" disappear. let's hope that wotte can do something. what it needs is a couple of "cloggers" in the defence ie, just get rid of the ball and not try to play to feet all the time. the younger ones may well have the enthusiasm but they seem to lack that killer instinct in that their football brains haven't matured yet. i used to have an uncomfortable opinion of davis, but let's face it, he has been in top form lately. if it hadn't been for him, we have have had at least another 3 or 4 defeats to contemplate. what it needs are at least 2 more defenders with the same skills and attitudes and at least one striker who knows where the goal is. let's hope that saga can do a pahars for us!

Once again we are Now under a new manager'ish. Rupert lowes plan have yet again not worked. This is getting to be a joke and Southampton are now a laughting stock in the country. All we need is stability in the dressing room but continuing changes in managment is unsettling to the players. Why is this happening and how much more can we put up with this situation of change at the top. I didn't think that Jan was a good chioce as head coach and he has proved me right. Look at leister flying high in league 1 with Person at the helm. Just think what if. Would we be looking at religation to league 1 or would we be looking at the premiership and Man united next season. As many of you know my feelings on Rupert lowe, I wish he and Wilde would have joined Jan and all three of them walk at of Southampton and NEVER come back. I CAN ONLY DREAM.

Realworldsaint, Soton says...

When will the majority of you learn. Jan was never going to get us success. He was playing with the Youth Team. I love the saints as much as anyone but you have to get real and wake up. Its quite simple loan / sell all your players of anyworth will not get you results. Having the play the academy team week in week out will not get you results. Jan never stood a chance. Look at the teams at the top of this league. Majority off all the top5 have players that have Prem experience. We dont, the majority have just been givemn their first ever pro contract. Its not going to happen. As for the last post of look what Nigel Pearsons done, yes I agree he is doing well at Leicester but even that team has players that have played in the Prem. Remember he only kept us up on the last week even with the likes of Stern John in the side.
No manager wants to come to us as they all know its a no brainer. No one has even linked to the managers job here like other clubs that struggle and its clear the manager is on the way out. Normally you get the likes of Billy DAvies, George Graham and any manager out of work being linked to a club but that has happened all season. REasin is simple - its just a very unattractive option even for an out of work manager.
I am sad to say that we are down this season and until someone comes in with a very large purse, probably without any real love for the club and justs wants a bit if fun with his spare 100million then either its administration or we are stuc with the merry-go-round that is Rupert Lowe !!!!
