‘Nonsense’ talked over fluoride plan says Alan Johnson

MP is backing Southampton fluoridation plan MP is backing Southampton fluoridation plan

HEALTH Secretary Alan Johnson has backed controversial plans to fluoridate Southampton’s water – revealing that he gave his own children fluoride tablets when they were younger.

Mr Johnson believes a lot of “nonsense” is talked about fluoridation, which has been the subject of fierce debate since proposals were made last year.

But anti-fluoride campaigners last night criticised the minister for “putting pressure” on the local health chiefs to approve the scheme.

More than 12,000 people voiced their opinions during a public consultation on the plans, which would affect nearly 200,000 Hampshire residents.

Board members at South Central Strategic Health Authority will next month vote on the plans, proposed by Southampton health chiefs to help improve children’s dental health.

Opponents argue adding fluoride is morally unacceptable and could lead to health problems including mottled teeth, cancers and brittle bones.

Mr Johnson said there is “no evidence” that adding fluoride causes health problems.

He believes the relatively good dental health in Birmingham, fluoridated since the 1960s, compared with a poorer record in non-fluoridated Manches-ter, proves it works.

“There’s a big issue of health inequalities here,” the minister told the Daily Echo.

“The health of those children’s teeth (in Birmingham) is just remarkable. Someone very effectively once said that fluoride gives poor kids rich kids’ teeth.

“My own experience is with my own children who I gave, when they were very small, fluoride tablets. None of them have had a filling or a problem with their teeth.”

The minister admitted a rejection of fluoridation for Southampton would be a “blow” to his hopes to see it become widespread across England, but accepted the decision must be made locally.

During the consultation Southampton City Council backed the plans, but Hampshire County, Eastleigh Borough, New Forest District and Test Valley Borough councils all voiced their opposition.

“It’s right that there should be a public consultation,” said Mr Johnson.

He added: “I hope that the public consultation leads to Southampton being ready to go forward. Manchester is close to doing the same thing, Yorkshire and Humber is close to doing the same thing.”

Last night, chairman of Hampshire Against Fluoridation, John Spottiswoode, described Mr Johnson’s comments, after the public consultation had finished, as “an unacceptable use of his position”.

So, you have chosen to give your children fluoride tablets. That's fine. You might also have chosen to feed them pigs and trans-fats, and McDonalds, soy, MSG, and other things. That's fine, too. That's your choice. But for those of us who do not choose to consume these things, we should have a choice of being able to avoid such terrible decisions. Get the hell out of our water.

Their teeth may be good, but will they end up as 'thick' as their Father??.
Another 'we are always right' government policy, just like Heathrow!!.

This is a total misuse of Johnson's political position. Only scientests would be able to argue the case for or against fluoridation, and internationally they are split on the subject because not enough research has been done.
His statement and interference does show what the Government's position is, though.
I remember some of Johnson's speeches at UCW conferences when I was a delegate.
He talked as much rubbish then as he does today.

This is the man who thinks that pepsi-cola, nestle, and walkers crisps are suitable sponsers for his
anti-obesity campaign.(as ridiculed in the pages of Private Eye).
He's not the brightest tool in the box.

MR. JOHNSON, what planet are you on.
We, the Soton people are opposed to fluoride. We do not want it - we, the people, can look after our own kind - the kids that are neglected by their parents, the little mites who have a problem with their mouths - now that is time to 'treat them'. Put your energies to stimulating our Dentists - they obviously sussed you all out - what double crossers you are.

Oh what a surprise! Maybe the parents of the children with bad teeth should be given fluoride tablets to give to their children and leave the rest of us alone.

Are we to assume from Mr. Johnson's comments that his children have never brushed their teeth?

Mass medication is not the way forward.

Nobody's listening to your waffle, Mr Johnson. We don't believe it's much to do with you how the residents of Southampton are treated.

Yes Mr Johnson, there is a lot of tosh talked about fluoride and you are the main person talking it. Its a terrible thing to realise that someone with your very limited knowledge is in an influential position in the NHS. No wonder that its still in a mess and that health of British people continues to decline. Why dont you try engaging your brain before mouthing such rubbish. You are a stupid and arrogant idiot who refuses to study any of the massive body of international evidence warning of the dangers of fluoride in order that you can claim its safe. Who told you all your pro fluoride nonsense, Let me guess, the British Fluoridation Society, which your government has been funding. or the British Dental Association which seems to benefit from the same gravy train or possibly it was the tooth fairy. Either way you are talking tosh based on little if any scientific knowledge. Just go away, you are a waste of space and time.

Perhaps the fluoride in the tablets is not the bi-product of industrial processes? Anyway, the real issue is CHOICE!

I've said it once, I'll say it again - the majority of us clean our teeth properly and look after our health!

Why should the Govt. mas-medicate and possibly poison the rest of us because a section of society can't be arsed?

I also completely disagree with the way the South Central SHA put their biased pro-fluoridation leaflet through everyone's doors outlining the benefits, without warning of the hazards... not happy about this at all!!
