PLANS for a huge new car park in Winchester have hit the buffers.
South West Trains (SWT) has delayed its plans for a three-storey, 384-space car park on land between the railway and Andover Road, blaming the recession.
The decision will be a major blow for the local building trade.
A SWT spokeswoman said: “The multi-storey at Winchester is on hold at the moment due to the changing economic climate. It will be reviewed but I can’t predict what will happen.”
The car park would have been the biggest in the city centre since the construction of the Brooks Centre in the late 1980s.
According to SWT, the current 182-space car park is usually full by 7.30am during the week. A public consultation had produced a favourable response.
