Health bosses deny anywhere was left out of fluroide consultation

HEALTH bosses in Southampton have denied they have left any area out of the public consultation on fluoridation, after the Daily Echo revealed what appeared to be more confusion surrounding the controversial scheme.

This paper reported some residents’ complaints they had not been properly included in the public consultation on the plans, and left in the dark about when their homes would be receiving fluoride, and how much would be coming through the taps.

But South Central Strategic Health Authority says the 7,500 people in the area where the water supplies will have fluoride added at times of high demand were fully included in the exercise to gain public opinion on the proposals.

Leaflets were sent to residents in the Bassett area of Southampton and they were invited to roadshow events during the 14-week exercise, although none was held in the area itself.

The SHA last night stressed it had treated Bassett as a full part of the consultation, and feedback from residents were taken on board when it made its decision on the plans.

More than 10,000 people had their say – including residents, campaigners on both sides and health professionals across Britain – on the plans to fluoridate the homes of nearly 200,000 Hampshire people. Of those respondents who live in the affected area, 72 per cent said they were against the proposals.

The SHA also commissioned a phone survey of 2,000 residents.

That found 38 per cent of respondents were opposed to fluoridation, 32 per cent were in favour, 19 per cent were neither for or against and ten per cent said they didn’t know.

The SHA last night said it listened to all feedback before agreeing to back fluoridation, when its board voted unanimously in favour of the scheme in February. “An intensive public awareness campaign ensured that all 195,000 residents that will be affected by the increase in fluoride levels were made aware of the three month long public consultation and had numerous opportunities to respond,” it said in a statement.

“Included among these residents are people living in the Bassett area that have been kept informed and have had the same opportunities to respond to the public consultation.

“This awareness campaign included newspaper advertising in the Daily Echo, ongoing TV and radio coverage and a mail delivery to over 110,000 homes in the local area, including Bassett.

“A map that clearly shows the areas that will receive increased levels of fluoride in their water supply is contained in the consultation document and also on the SHA website.

“The SHA is absolutely committed to keeping people informed on the progress of the fluoridation scheme.”

"says the 7,500 people in the area where the water supplies will have fluoride added at times of high demand were fully included in the exercise to gain public opinion on the proposals"

True but we were not told of the variable nature of the poisoning.

Did the SHA consult the people of Bassett about the fact that they would receive variable amounts of fluoride? If not, it sounds as if they left out something rather important!

The article (above) states that:
"The SHA also commissioned a phone survey of 2,000 residents.

That found 38 per cent of respondents were opposed to fluoridation, 32 per cent were in favour, 19 per cent were neither for or against and ten per cent said they didn’t know."

There were more votes against fluoridation than were in favour, so what was the purpose of the poll? Total waste of time and money (funded by the taxpayer).

If we still live in a country where democracy rules, why was the decision allowed to be reversed?

We don't want our tap water interferred with, no ifs or buts.

I don't seem to remember that any residents were told by the SHA that their views on water fluoridation would be completely ignored even if the took part in the "consultation."

The Echo did not make their own news the SHA did not mention Bassett in their consultation booklet. I've still got a copy and the only mention on the web page consultation document is this "This scheme would provide fluoridated water to areas both inside and outside Southampton City PCT boundary. While the Bassett area, served by the Yewhill Water Booster Station (WBS), is not targeted in this scheme the occasional use of the WBS will result in this section occasionally receiving low concentrations of fluoride. Scheme 1 appears feasible and in terms of costs benefits this is the best value single viable scheme."
There was no drop in at Bassett either so the SHA are not being honest.

Interesting comment from waf - I wonder how were meant to find that document on the web? We aren't all tecchies! The maps distributed by the NHS showed red and blue zones with various districts of Southampton actually named as getting fluoride, but also a green zone (without Bassett being mentioned by name) with no reference whatsoever to what the green bit meant. Therefore many people thought we woulnd't get it in Bassett. And the NHS says it "consulted" residents, but even if it did it didn't consult them about the things that really mattered - ie stressing the fact that half of Bassett would get fluoride and the fact that it would get it at random times when the usual supplies were low. I don't call that a consultation! the Echo was right first time and shouldn't have watered their story down - if the NHS says there was an intensive advertising campaign how come they forgot to mention the PART TIME fluoride in Bassett in all its adverts? No consultation, no fluoride.

The NHS South Central public question and answer session, available on the web during the so-called consultation period, said:
The areas of Southampton and South West Hampshire, where the level of fluoride in the water supply would be increased, are Central, Weston, Lordshill, Outer Shirley (where's that?), Freemantle, Portswood, St Denys, Totton, Netley and parts of Eastleigh

Many districts are not on that list but have now been told they are due for fluoridation, eg Aldermoor, Woolston and Redbridge. And BASSETT!! Most of Highfield is also due to be fluoridated, but that district still isn't mentioned on the (current) NHS summary of the scheme. It's on the map but not named in the list.

The SHA has some explaining to do! Luckily they haven't been asked to arrange any wild parties in places where hop-based refreshments are brewed.

The main thing left out of the consultation process is the public opinion that most of us do not want fluoride !

"For more than 300 years tobacco has given solace, relaxation, and enjoyment to mankind. At one time or another during those years critics have held it responsible for practically every disease of the human body. One by one these charges have been abandoned for lace of evidence"
Statement made by American Doctors, (under the pay of BAT), in 1954. over 40 years AFTER a medical student first noticed a link between smoking and cancer, and was hushed up.
We are being told Fluoride is safe because they've had it for 40 years in the west midlands, ignoring many studies worldwide pointing out all kinds of ill effects, including an increase in bone cancer.
Just because people are not dropping dead in the streets of Birmingham, doesn't mean fluoride is not having a negative effect on health.

Good point, HowDictorial - Sholing was not named as a fluoridated area on the public q&a website during consultation, nor in the official consultation booklet, and is still not named even now on the NHS website which specifies the fluoridated districts. However, the map shows that most of Sholing is in the (red) zone! Maybe the SHA hasn't heard of Sholing. While I'm on, I might as well say that the pre-vote documents stated that "Outer Shirley" would be fluoridated. But it's quite clear now that the WHOLE of Shirley will be given fluoride. The SHA's ssense of geography is a complete shambles - if you are miffed, contact your local councillor to complain.

In time we'll probably find out that someone high up took a bung to get this through. Why else would a health authority want to poison people?

What about Bitterne Park? That's never been mentioned in any of the lists as being fluoridated but some roads are going to get the dreaded stuff thanks in part to our councillors, all three of whom voted in favour. I don't know why the Echo got cold feet on Saturday. It isn't just Bassett - there are loads of people in Southampton who looked at the districts nominated for fluoridation during the consultation and didn't go any further when they found that their part of the city wasn't mentioned. I agree the SHA's map was useless - what's the point of a map with some red, blue and green bits (and with some districts named at random) if they don't bother to say what it all means? The consultation was flawed to the point of not really being a proper consultation. Give up now guys, this whole business is a complete emabarrassment to the NHS.

Wake up, thank you for helping inform people.
I just posted what is written below on another page but it is relevant.
Lots of people are taking 'bungs' for dodgy stuff and various health departments are in the thick of it.
Only our sickness makes money, the longer you are sick the more money they make....a medicine only has to be 5% effective to get licenced!!!

Just recently, a company called Baxters were and are still churning out the flu vaccines.
They 'accidently' mixed up some vials of live H5N1 and put the live virus into the vaccines. These vaccines were sold to 18 countries. As far as I know, none have been recalled. Mixing the two also makes H5N1 highly infectious which it normally isnt.
Baxter admitted their mistake...they remain unpunished.
