Southampton FC are going to appeal against the 10 points deduction

SAINTS are set to launch an appeal against the 10-point penalty which has condemned them to relegation from the Coca-Cola Championship.

The Football League imposed the penalty having investigated Saints' finances since their holding company, Southampton Leisure Holdings plc, went into administration.

Saints argued that because the club itself is not in administration they should avoid the mandatory points penalty, but the League today decided the 10-point deduction stands.

If the south-coast club finish outside the bottom three they will still be relegated as the points will be taken from this season's total, while if they finish in the drop zone they will start next season in League One on minus-10 points Saints, currently second from bottom and four points from safety, therefore face the bizarre prospect of playing their final two games for the right to start the League One season on zero points rather than to avoid the drop.

But the saga is set to drag on after administrators issued an angry response to the League's decision.

Their statement read: ''The administrators and the club were informed of the League's intention to issue a release on the findings of the independent forensic report five minutes before its publication, leaving no time for consultation and to inform fans, players and staff.

''We are of the opinion that an incorrect conclusion has been reached. The football regulations do not apply to the circumstances surrounding Southampton Football Club.''

Saints also refuted the Football League's claim they withdrew their co-operation towards the investigation.

The statement concluded: ''Both the club and the administrators are now considering their positions and expect to launch an appeal.''

Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney acknowledged the club do have the right to appeal.

He said: ''There is an appeal mechanism and it's up to Southampton to decide whether they want to appeal and on what basis.''

He added: ''(The decision) wasn't inevitable, we commissioned forensic accountants to look at the situation. They gave us their report, they drew our attention to the holding company's annual report and we got external legal advice.

''The weight of all three of those made it clear that the club's affairs were inextricably linked to the holding company and, as a consequence, we took the view that an administrator had been appointed relating to the club and therefore we had no choice under our regulations but to apply the sporting sanctions.

''I have sympathy for the fans but the fans know as well as the rest of us that this has not been a shining example of football management.

"We have had changes and tension at board level and so the fans have had a difficult time.

''I can't imagine there is a Southampton fan in the world who welcomes this decision but the job of the Football League Board is to protect the integrity of the competition and that is what we have done.''

Probably should resist this dig but what happened to your assertions that Lowe would be our saviour, Jan was the man and our youngsters would do well with an exciting brand of dutch total football??

and for all those years when we ran well and in the black it counts for nothing. and we get punished for going 100k over a 6m o.d while others run in much worse debt. it stinks of hypocrisy.

the guys the wrecked it aren't even here.

its a silly way to punish clubs. look at luton. a mid table side who will be in the conference next season. is that fair on the other conference sides? now luton will eat up the ONE auto promotion place at the expense of others. and in league 2 a few sides will stay up who are blatantly not good enough to do so. if b'mouth go down next year then thats the two prom places sewn up. so what chance for eastleigh and salisbury? if eastleigh go up of course... lord maw-squinny is an idiot!

What a strange situation,if we manage to stay up,we go down,if we go down we start next season with minus 10 points. It seems as though the football league do not want us in the Championship.Could it have anything to do with being on the football league panel.
I think it's time that the football league punished teams in some other way and left relegation/promotion to be decided ON THE PITCH.I'm fed up with NCFC supporters telling me they hope that my beloved Saints go bust so they only have to give one point back.I hope they come down with us.

Lets hope the appeal gets the right decision, then we can at least say we were relegated because we were not good enough.

Saints forever

Funny how West Ham's holding company are in the same situation but because the Premier League has different rules to the Football League they get away with it- again.

If this appeal is going to cost alot in fees for the solicitors thenplease don't appeal. The truth is SFC is the sole breadwinner of Southampton Leisure holdings and we can't get away from that fact.Where do you think most of the money for players etc has gone.We would do well to take the punishment and start afresh next season. We started in Div south and rose to the Premiership once and we can do it again COYR

Fair one, shouldn't have sniped.

Back to the story and shouldn't we just let sleeping dogs lie??

If we appeal it there's every chance they could come down harder on us...

No point apealing, it would cost money. What are we short of? Money. Take it on the chin, hope we win and come fourth from bottom, then go down with no points deduction. RL got his wish, and put us in a different league!

I am sure the appeal will go well after the fool Leon Crouch admitted on Radio 5 that SLH was set up for the sole purpose of avoiding administration.Mahwh
inney was interviewed straight afterwards and they discussed Crouch's comments.Genius.

Doesn't this just say it all..

I trust RL and the rest of the people who naviagted us to this dismal end are embarrassed and ashamed. Now the fans have to pick up the peices and go forward.

Let's hope we can start afresh next season and get back to where we belong, with a proper owner who CARES!

Saints must go out of administration before the start of next season or it will be minus more points.

What a mess. Actually, what an avoidable mess. The cynic in me is tempted to agree with those who think that Rupert waited until after the deadline to put SLH into administration knowing full well that the League would still find against the club. It is not out of character for him to do something like that - we've seen him pull off various stunts over the seasons that were obviously driven by spite. But which ever way you slice it, we are still gonna cop a 10 point deduction. The best we can hope for is the unlikely miracle that we win our remaining games and the other clubs results go in our favour and that the FL's 10 point penalty was just a bad dream.. Oh, it wasn't? So League 1 beckons whatever happens over the last two games. Which raises another ugly scenario. I cant help thinking that the league has shot itself in the foot yet again by making the announcement relating to our punishment at this point in time. Because it doesn't make any difference really what our results are, the other teams immediately above us in the Championship fighting for survival are going to question our team's desire to win when the outcome of both games doesn't affect which division we play in next year. How are Barnsley or Norwich gonna take it if we look like we rolled over against Forest on the last day of the season and the result sends one of them down with us? It was bleedin' obvious we were gonna get punished with the 10 point penalty - the most appropriate way the league could and should have acted was to delay the announcement til the end of the season. At least this way they could save us from the added embarassment of being made to look responsible for dragging another club down with us. Its bad enough that Rupert and his cronies have turned us from being a favoured 'second' club into bad joke without Lord HawHaw and his chums cocking things up further. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, it does. You couldn't make it up.
