Eastleigh Liberal Democrats welcome Dan Clarke

THEY were to have battled each other at the next general election.

But last night Daniel Clarke stood shoulder to shoulder with Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne after sensationally quitting as Labour’s Westminster hopeful in Eastleigh.

The 26-year-old teacher has dropped a political bombshell – revealed by the Daily Echo – by defecting to the Liberal Democrats.

His decision has shocked local Labour Party officials who after the European and county council elections will get down to the job of finding a new candidate.

With a general election having to take place by June next year, they will have to move fast to get someone in place to fight Labour’s corner.

At the 2005 general election Labour came third in Eastleigh behind the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats who hold the seat with a 568-vote majority.

Eastleigh is seen as a key battleground seat which ranks as the Conservatives’ 11th most winnable target across the country.

Brushing aside any immediate ambitions of becoming an MP, Mr Clarke said: “I am only 26 so I have got a long way to go.’’ But he said he was prepared to be part of the Liberal Democrat team which would keep Chris Huhne at Westminster.

It was in January 2008 that Mr Clarke was picked as Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Eastleigh.

He revealed to the Daily Echo that last July he had seriously considered quitting the party but was talked out of it.

Mr Clarke said: “I, like many other people, have become increasingly disillusioned with the Labour Party.

Unfortunately I no longer believe that it is committed to realising the dreams of people like me.

“The Labour Party leadership is showing a total lack of urgency to make this country fairer and better.

“For some time, particularly towards the end of the Blair premiership, I believed that at heart the Government had the right ideas and that it would eventually come good. I have now lost this faith.’’ Mr Clarke believed that the Eastleigh’s general election battle was now a two-horse race between Mr Huhne and the Conservatives’ Westminster hopeful Maria Hutchings.

Mr Huhne said: “I am delighted to welcome Dan Clarke as a member of the Liberal Democrats. He is a thoughtful and committed individual who cares deeply about creating a fair and sustainable society that only the Liberal Democrats can and will deliver.”

A Labour South East spokesperson said: “We are disappointed that Daniel has decided to leave the Labour Party at this crucial time in the world’s economy. “

Remember the days when politicians wore ties of their party's colour? About time they found a new colour for their ties as they've all been wearing that awful shade of purple for years now. How about a tie with orange, red, blue and green stripes featuring and emblem of a bird of liberty sat in an oak tree with a rose in its beak. That should be suitable for all politicians of all parties.

Well, no-one is going to accuse Daniel of consistency. When I first knew him - 7 or 8 years ago - he was an activist for Conor Burns, then the Tory candidate.

Next stop the Monster raving Loony Party?

It seems to me that both Labour and the Tories have given up campaining in Eastliegh.

At least the lib-dems put in some effort.

Yes, putting in the effort that has made Eastleigh the mess it is today....building over allotments, closing golf courses, developing on public spaces, charging for parking on a Sunday....it goes on.

I have not felt it necessary to reply to most of the brainless abuse which has been directed at me on this site, however I must reply to Steven Broomfield. The first problem with your post Steven is that you say "when you first knew" me. This would suggest that we know each other personally and could therefore suggest that your comments on my character actually have some authority. We scarcely know each other, we simply serve on West End Parish Council together. We are merely acquaintances. So, quite frankly, your comments on my character are not worth much at all.

The second problem is that you forget to mention that I was aged 16 to 17 when I attended those Tory events/ activities. At the time I had not developed my political views, I was open minded and willing to learn about all parties. Incidentally, I was attending political events of other parties at the same time, for the same reasons of curiosity. Clearly if I knew at the time that I was later going to develop strong political views and that spiteful, vindictive people would use my presence at those events against me, I would not have attended them. But we are all human and we all make mistakes when we are young and that was one of mine.

Anyone who has known me since my late teens knows that I have consistently held progressive views and a passionate belief in greater social justice and greater care for the environment. The fact that I no longer believe the Labour Party works to advance these, does not show any inconsistency on my part. I am looking forward to making a positive contribution to my local community with the Liberal Democrats. I would kindly advise you though Steven to tone down the spiteful nature of your comments. Since you have lost elections in Fair Oak, Bishopstoke and West End in recent years, your tactics clearly alienate the public. You may not be very bright Steve, but try to compensate by being pleasant. All the best.

I think I'll pass on making a response, thanks. Didn't realise you were so touchy.

Well done Dan.
It's 'operation stop the tory' here in Eastleigh for the next GE - a strange coalition of non lib dems types who are nevertheless determined to see Chris Huhne returned and Maria Hutchings dumped out the Tory Party.
