Police investigating Teresa de Simone's murder take 69 DNA swabs

Teresa de Simone Teresa de Simone

DETECTIVES investigating the 30-year-old murder of Teresa de Simone have swabbed 69 people for their DNA, the Daily Echo can exclusively reveal.

Police have centred their enquiries to find her killer on those who were spoken to in the initial enquiry – and so far 52 have been ruled out because the DNA does not match.

Forensic test results are still being sought on the remainder and are expected back within weeks.

It’s a significant step for Detective Chief Inspector Phil McTavish and his team of 20 officers tasked with reinvestigating Teresa’s murder after the man locked up for her killing had his conviction quashed.

Sean Hodgson was freed by the Court of Appeal in March after a DNA test proved he didn’t rape and murder the teenage gas board clerk.

I do hope that all the samples from those not involved will be destroyed.

Perhaps this could be a good reason to keep them.

Now an unsolved murder.

Who knows how important they may be in 5 years time etc

I am with Hulla on this but you make an important point.

If we accept that any DNA sample can provide some future use - even to eliminate suspects, then we must press ahead full speed with the capture of the DNA of everyone in the UK and everyone that visits the UK. That way there can be no escape and justice will be swift.

However be careful what you wish for because you can bet your life local Government will use the DNA database to fine you for clearing your throat in a public place.

And to quote the minister on the radio last week "we shouldn't get rid of the DNA taken from people who are innocent of a crime, in case they re-offend".

It doesn't matter whether you, me or the government think that keeping DNA of innocent people would be 'useful' in the future. Nor can we state we'll just keep it for 6 years or 12, like Wacky Jacqui has proposed. Because both of those have been ruled illegal by the courts. Yes, the government has been told it must not retain people's DNA, but its just carrying on any way.
But then you can't trust them with simple personal expenses either....
