Southampton's annual naked bike ride taking place this evening

HUNDREDS of cyclists will hit the streets of Southampton this evening wearing nothing but their helmets as the Naked Bike Ride comes to town.

The bold riders will set out in the buff from Southampton Common on a tour of the city to encourage people to dump the car and go green.

The ride leaves Southampton Common at 6pm.

Might cause a few accidents due to distracted drivers.

From the picture it doesn't look very naked to me? - Does anyone know if many fit birds go in for this? - Just wondering if it's worth the petrol money to go and have a perv??

It's worth pointing out that this is a prelude to National Bike Week which starts tomorrow.

Whilst there may be some fit birds, and also some hippocrocopigs, putting that aside, what has happened to the laws regarding indecent exposure?
If a single person were to do it, he/she would be arrested.

Is it only married people who will get away with it?

Oh get a grip, man! First it's "health and safety should stop people walking on fire" now it's "the human body is indecent". Do you want the entire world to be as dull and ordinary as you?

Its a ride around the common, and so not classed in the same way as other public spaces iirc.

An indecent exposure charge has to prove sexual undertone, and this isnt the message here... I may be wrong however.

As for the ride itself, not sure of what practical value it has, much like the Critical Mass meetings it doesnt actually seem to solve any of the big questions. Infact I'd argue that its a very real distraction from those issues...

Nah, you're not. A woman breast-feeding in public - unless she meets with some extremely narrow-minded copper - won't be facing indecent exposure charges. Like you imply, the exposure has to actually be indecent.

Last time we cycled down to St Marys, over to the High Street, Bargate, precinct, London Road, Cowherds and back to the start near the Uni.

There were lots of onlookers in the city centre.

Not a case of being dull, and personally I am very adventerous.
What I am pointingh out is the inconsistency in rules and regulations that are enforced for certain people/activities, yet ignored for others.

What about the case of the couple cycling/walking around the country recently, they were arrested in may places they went to.

Let's get this straight. Being naked in public in England is not an offence. There is no such offence as "indecent exposure" since the 2003 Sexual Offences Bill was introduced. It is illegal to intentionally cause alarm and distress by exposing one's genitals. That's flashing, in common terms.

The naked rambler referred to earlier (Steve Gough) was arrested numerous times in England, but charges were never brought against him. The fact is that there is no law against simple nudity even if some members of the public and some police forces might wish there were. (Scotland has a different law and Gough was prosecuted there).

The naked bike ride is a joyful, happy event, clearly no distress is intended and is within the law. Last night I would guess 80% or more riders were naked/topless, though media pictures will tend to avoid any visible "rude bits" so it might appear otherwise.
