A STUDENT paralysed from the neck down after being restrained by a doorman at a Southampton nightclub is not expected to get any better, a court was told.

John Jones’ consultant in spinal injuries, Clive Inman, described how the 22-year-old needed round-theclock help for “all the activities of daily living”, in a statement read out to Southampton Crown Court.

After he was discharged from hospital on December 3 last year – ten months after he suffered his injuries at the KAOS nighclub – Mr Jones went to live with his mother and two brothers on the ground floor of their semidetached house in Cardiff.

The court was told how the former Southampton Solent University student is now on a waiting list for wheelchair accessible accommodation and needs the help of two people to dress him and transfer him using hoists. He also needs help with eating.

Prosecutor William Mousley said that Mr Jones was admitted to the Welsh Spinal Injury Centre and continues to have regular outpatient appointments.

“The prognosis is that his condition is not expected to improve any more,” he said.

Mr Mousley has alleged that doorman Andrew Lee grabbed Mr Jones from behind his neck to throw him out of the club after he had been arguing with his girlfriend Aslihan Konan during a punk-themed fancy dress student night.

Mr Mousley described Lee’s actions as unnecessary and unreasonable, and said that the hold was dangerous.

Lee, 31, of Alcantara Crescent, Southampton, denies causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm to Mr Jones at the KAOS nightclub on February 26 last year.

The trial continues.
