A DEVOTED mother burst into tears as she cradled her son after a jury found a doorman at Southampton nightclub was responsible for the catastrophic injury that had wrecked his life.

After retiring for nine minutes short of eight hours, the panel of seven men and five women convicted Andrew Lee of causing grievous bodily harm to Southampton Solent student John Jones.

Lee, 31, of Alcantara Crescent, Southampton, showed no emotion as the word “guilty” rang out around the court.

Judge Derwin Hope warned him that he faces the threat of prison when he is sentenced next month.

The student had his life destroyed after Lee had grabbed him in a full nelson hold at the KAOS club in St Mary’s Road in February of last year.

He had gone with his girlfriend, Aslihan Konan, dressed as punksat a fancy dress night. But an evening of fun ended in horror when Lee moved in after seeing the pair argue.

His actions were “unnecessary and unreasonable,” prosecutor William Mousley alleged at the opening of the 12-day trial. “He caused the terrible injury that followed.”

Despite his girlfriend – who sat alongside Mr Jones throughout the hearing – pleading with Lee to leave him alone, the doorman dragged him away. Seconds later, the pair crashed to the floor and the student suffered a broken neck.

Together with his family, he attended court every day in a special wheelchair.

Lee, who had a previous conviction for assault, claimed he thought Mr Jones was going to attack him and put him in one grip to eject him. But he freed himself and he then put him in the full nelson hold.

After being told of the effect of the injury, he said he was “gutted” but at no stage during the hearing did he offer any apology to the student.

Jurors found him guilty on a majority of ten to two.

After the hearing, Mr Jones said: “The verdict was absolutely brilliant.

I’m really pleased.”

Through tears, his mother added: “I think it’s great. I really just want to thank the jury.”

Detective Sergeant Lee Macarthur, the officer in the case, said: “Throughout his ordeal, John has remained positive and I am sure this attitude will see him succeed in whatever he chooses to follow.”
