Le Tissier explains Pinnacle's withdrawal

Le Tissier explains Pinnacle's withdrawl Le Tissier explains Pinnacle's withdrawl

Matthew Le Tissier has explained Pinnacle's decision to withdraw their bid for Southampton Football Club today.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said: "We had actually spoken to the backers and talked them into accepting the 10 point deduction and getting on with things, but there were other issues that came up and issues that we were only aware of after we had signed the exclusivity agreement.

"From that point of view the backers have taken a stance that they are not willing under the terms on offer to put the money in."

Asked to shed light on what those "other issues" were, Le Tissier said: "Not at this point, no."

The Dell legend said this was the end of his attempt to take-over the club.

"As a fan I am equally frustrated, but I certainly don't think the way forward is to throw abuse at anybody. I think there has been some incidents where people, who are clearly frustrated and upset, have taken it out on the wrong people if you ask.

"Those people need to take stock of things, think about the bigger picture and hopefully Mark Fry can find somebody who is willing to come forward and save our club."

Asked why he thought the administrator was "not surprised" by Pinnacle's failure to complete the deal, Le Tissier said: "I'm not sure exactly what he meant by that to be honest with you.

"Maybe he thought it was the right thing to do that we were made aware of certain conditions so late in the day that maybe he was not surprised that the backers were not willing to put their money in under those conditions, I assume."

Le Tissier added: "The 10 point penalty wasn't the sticking point, there were other issues. We had accepted that we would have to start next season with minus 10, that didn't become the issue in the end, but certainly other groups will have to deal with the Football League and hopefully they will have better luck than we did.

"I'm still optimistic that there is people out there and the opportunity there is good enough that somebody will step into the breach."

Asked if he would be interested in joining another bidder, he said: "That's something that I will have to sit down and consider to be honest with you.

"The decision was made today and the rest of the afternoon I've spent on the golf course, which I've just come off so I haven't even had time to think about that kind of stuff.

"I am going to sit down in the next 24 hours and decide where my future lies and what I've had time to take stock then I will make those decisions as and when anything like that arises."

He admitted the delays had damaged the team's preparations for next season. "It's looking increasingly unlikely that the team will be prepared enough and from that point of view you might have thought that all parties would have been trying their up most to try to get the deal done, but sadly that wasn't the case and we have to move forward.

"Everything is up in the air at the moment. Once we have taken stock we will see what the future holds for Southampton Football Club, that is the main thing in my eyes, my future can be sorted out at any time, the future of Southampton Football Club is the most important thing."

So Pinnacle's backers weren't happy with something they didn't realise they had signed? That's not very good is it.

Matty, you're doing the club no favours by continuing the cloak and dagger stuff.

The "other issues" are either extra points to be deducted or (I hope) the FL not being convinced of the financial validity of the bid.

The FL are obviously trying to stitch us up with further points reductions for something...late payments?

If that's the case...who the hell would want to buy a club on -27 points?.

A friend of mine is a Luton fan and said the FL just love sticking the boot in when the club is already on it's knees.

Don't take it out on the club...it was PG who challanged you about the points not us.

I know there are those on here who don`t think the FL rules should apply to Saints but just consider this. Just suppose the mystery money men behind Michael Falkia didn`t realise they would HAVE to reveal themselves to the League and spent yesterday trying to get the League to waive the rules about "fit and proper persons" and needing to have their identities revealed. Now that would put a different slant on it wouldn`t it. Maybe not to those who think the FL has it in for Saints.

SaintPaul says...
6:25pm Tue 30 Jun 09

If Mawhinney and his Football League pals continue to obstruct any serious buyer then there will be no SFC, as I see it the FL will not allow any new bidder to contest the 10 point deduction and also want the option to impose further penalty points if they see fit. If I was a buyer I could accept the -10 points, saints would have a fighting chance, but should there be the prospect of further deductions that could easily lead to the club's demise then why would I want to invest in a business venture that had already faile before it got off the starting blocks? You've only got to look at what happened to the likes of Leeds and Luton, this is a stark warning to any prospective buyers and unitl the FL start to consider what is fair and reasonable SFC will not be sold and that we be the end of it.

So let's not balme Pinnacle, MLT, Fialka or Fry, it's the FL that need to be held accountable here, the reason MLT will not discuss these issues is because is likely to put off other buyers and he doesn't want that.

Agreed, and Le-Tiss made it clear today that it was issues other than the 10 point deduction which made pinnacle backers pull the plug...I don't however, think it would be something as petty as not wanting to reveal a name!

The FL want the right to impose further deductions, that is what they and Pinnacle have been in negotiations about for the past week. The deal that Pinnacle proposed was that they would concede the 10 point deduction on the condition the FL agreed not to impose any further penalties, and guess waht the FL would not agree, it's OK for them to hold Pinnacle to ransom but not the other way round!

I agree the FL need to have a serious look at the whole issue of penalty points but IF it`s the case that this is what the last week was all about I can`t see that the FL could ever have agreed a carte blanche never to impose any further penalty. My money is still on there being a problem with the alleged backers, whoever they were.

Dear matt. I would like to apologise on behalf of any saints fans whose comments in this forum may have caused offence to you and your group. I have not made any negative comments although I can understand how your group is feeling hurt when lets face it they were hoping to save a football club. I can however also understand how some saints fans who posted less than gracious comments may been feeling. I work with the general public and people will express themselves differently and also react to concern and worry in differnt ways. I do feel that some of the abuse. Whilst harmful was not meant maliciously but out of frustration of being kept in the dark nd not knowing what was happening to their club tat many have supported for years. To some the club is a business and a livlihood and will mo doubt move on. All be it reluctantly. However. To others the club was their passion and social life. Or some of it when they had finished a hard days work. And obviously when you loose something irresplacable that you enjoyed we all react differently. I personally would be happy to support a club on minus 30 knowing that league two may beckon. I appreciate money profits would not be instant but there would be a club that could bounce back. The true fans would turn out and the atmoshere in the club may even improve and become the real family affair that we used to have instead of money grabbing directors and players that ruin the game in the higher leagues. Thank you matt and co once again and please don't be put of or upset by frustated people who express their feelings differently than you

Don't want to bring anybody down, but if your new owners can't agree a CVA with the club's creditors then you will get another points deduction. It will be a minimum of -15 points under the FL rules for exiting administration. I know it isn't fair but if you don't get the 2nd deduction then the FL will get sued by Leeds, Luton, AFCB, Rotherham, and anyone else who has had it imposed.

Do you honestly believe that LeTiss, Lynham, Fialka ect have spent the last 6 weeks trawling the echo websites to see what people think of them? These are serious businessmen looking to save our football club - the comments posted on here dont mean diddly squat to them.
PG have withdrawn because of the unresonable behaviour of the FL and any other potential purchasers wont come forward for the same reason. The FL is killing us as they did Luton and tried to do to Bournemouth. They dont give a toss coz we aint big box office.
I firmly believe all at PG did all they could but the FL would not budge and were insisting on further points deductions.

MLT - always a legend. Just hope RL doesnt come back!!!

I am well aware they are serious businessmen, but no doubt ill-feeling towards Fialka filtered back to him from somewhere- he even said so and was threatening pulling out for that reason. The Echo has run a story about Fialka's credentials on the back of public opinion IMHO, a lot of which they themselves would have got from views on this forum.

Apart from people on here, who else has in Le Tiss's words 'been throwing abuse'? The FL have done a lot wrong but not sure they could be viewed as being abusive.

Having said that Andy, agree that Pinnacle werent sitting on their arse all this time and no doubt did give everything they had on a procedural level. Le Tiss is still a legend.

"Le Tissier explains Pinnacle's withdrawal" says the heading - but he doesn't does he?

We know that the league places lots of restrictions on clubs coming out of administration: on transfers, wages etc. Have the league thrown some new penalty/restriction in? If not then shouldn't a serious bidder have found all this out on day one? I have heard lots from Pinnacle about "the FL only told us very late..." but shouldn't they have known/found out what the league restrictions/penalti
es were? They spent enough valuable time - If they'd Googled Luton and Rotherham they would have found out a fair bit . I know this is all guesswork - but NO ONE IS TELLING US ANYTHING...

I don't blame Matty, his intentions were right.
It's not looking good, I think it could all be over in under 72hours time.
At best, Saints are going down again to League 2 next season with the 10 points deduction, no coaching staff, no key players and no time to prepare for the tough season ahead.
All I can say is if, and that's a big IF we get taken over we all need to be at every home game and support the club. That support will put the Saints back where they belong.

JESUS CHRIST! is there anything some of you wont forgive. Talk about good natured, its a bloody good job half the people on here arent buying the club or we really would be out of business.

Go right back to start of this FARCE and read the statements from Lynam and MLT and more recently Fialka. Nothing they have said or done has ANY continuity AT ALL.

1, How many wealthy backers were there. First 4, then 1, then a group or wealthy family, now none.

2, What are they worth. Firstly a PERSONAL net worth of 'several hundred million'. Now, we don't know but people with 000's millions could have just bought 1st and battled the league in court afterwards.

3, 'the ten point deduction is not a deal breaker', isn't it? no where in any other statement has anyone involved been able to explain anything other than use the phrase 'other issues' - If their not buying us, it won't matter to tell us what they are then and treat us with a little dignity and intelligence?

4, They tell us that the backers' identity will be revealed after the take over then Mickey Mouse goes on Sky sports news! laughable! then Lynam tells us he planned that afterwards. Hands up if you were born yesterday!

This is not how serious business works fellow fans, this is classic making it up because we are miles out of our depth behaviour. Think Branson, Sugar, hell even the Glazers have more PR skill than this...

They have just spent 5 weeks of our lives NOT buying the club and ultimately NOT apologizing for it but hey ' they did their best '. NO they didnt, they realised it was going to take longer to make a profit with the deductions th FL are allowed to impose so they f****d off. THATS THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT, THATS BUSINESS.

Did they pull out because they love the club and they want to see it progress, no, didnt think so....MLT needs to start polishing that halo.

END OF.

A sad day. I always felt that we should back off and let things run their course without jumping to ill founded conclusions. That is getting very hard to do as there seems no reason to keep things secret anymore. Whilst Matt and the rest of them keep us out of the picture we have little alternative but to assume that the whole PG thing was a massive con from the word go. What wlse can they expect us to think, no point hem getting all precious about it. What were these other issues? Why so secret? If it is the league docking us further points then just say so, it won't put off any further bids because they will find out soon enough anyway. So it can't be that. MLT you are still a god, the rest of you - PG, Fry, The FL either tell us what is happening or expect people to make assumptions about what a bunch of useless muppets you are. Or is that what you are trying to keep secret - too late I think it is out.

Who honestly believes that there is a consortium waiting to buy us? Businessmen who have acquired adequate personal wealth to consider purchasing a football club will generally be looking for a return on their investment. Okay, there will always be fans who put being a fan ahead of common sense. None of the supposed other consortia appear to have fans so we can assume they are looking upon a purchase as a business transaction requiring a reasonable return on their investment
With huge debts, players understandably leaving for clubs able to guarantee payment of wages, and uncertainty over 10 or 25 points deductions I believe it very unlikely a bid will complete this week. Having supported the club for over 40 years, thoughout our halcyon days and the past few years of incompetence on and off the pitch, the current situation pains me.
Let's all be realistic, there will be no deal this week, we will miss the League deadlines and we will follow Accrington Stanley and Aldershot in being expelled from the League.
Put yourself in the place of the club's main creditors. Their best recovery of money owed to them is by the demolition of St Mary's and replacing with flats. Riverside apartment anyone?

through gritted teeth mate - yes but I would be highly suspicious.
There's a bottoml ine here, if we had trusted Rupert rather than the Echo and the rumour mongers we'd still have a football club.

Hands up all those that trusted the Echo before it started slagging Rupert big time?
What are you talking about. I do hope you are not suggesting Rupert is anything other than a complete cnut who had a massive part to play in ruining our club

Matty you are a legend and always will be. Thankyou for all you have done for us. If this really is the end then thanks for the memories. 30 plus years as a fan, good times.....and bad. I have always worn my Saints heart on my sleeve, and I will continue to do so. If the club dies, a part of me will die too. But I will remain a proud Saint til the day I die.

None of their so called reasons for doing so have been vindicated, and now it looks like they'll end up with exactly what they deserve. Thanks guys, as a staunch supporter no-matter-what you all sicken me.

I really don't think a few thousand on the gate everyweek would have saved us from slipping deeper and deepr in debt to be honest.

I hate to be a realist here but Red Bull have just shelled out for German team Markranstädt and promised to invest 100million euros, so they aren't going to buying another team a week later are they?

On one of the other pages a poster mentioned the wasted money in the past. He bemoaned in a heartfelt way the has-been players taking the big wages out of us for little product. Another post spoke of the future and just hoped for a simple club existing, even if not lavish and ambitious.

WELL, we had that this time last year and people wasted that opportunity to avoid the mess of this summer. Last summer was a crossroads for each fan.
We had some realism about the strength of the club (or the strength of the share price, but then that is much the same in modern football, deal with it). Lowe wanted the club to survive and get better over time. He may have wanted that because he feared for his shares but I am big enough to see that doesn't really matter, we were pulling in the same direction after all. MORE THAN THAT we had the team that poster would have preferred with so much of the wasted players on the way out. Players young, keen and fit would make up our team. The luanacy of automatic team starts for has-beens and the famous but injured and first team training apart from the reserves was brought to an end. Managers not committed to us and enviously wanted a transfer as the answer to every problem or they will walk were no longer wanted. The Saturday team was to be picked on merit that week. Skills were to have a value and a purpose. The football would coincidentally be more impressive. Yes victories would not come easy, but oh what a thrill to see the boys edge it out through quality and verve! We could have been such proud fans. 'A Great Escape' from the financial calamities of relegation and football wages.
BUT NO, people had to moan, had to stay away, had to talk the team down and encourage others to not go.
We have such arrogant support. Some like to score mighty points by knowing better than the players, the coaches and the board about football and are willing to stop being genuine fans to stand their ground.
And at any point in the year we could have turned the corner as fans but didn't. Err I am rambling now, sorry.

But a pertinant point I think is that the future we might have now will be like the recent past. If we survive, it might well be with a modest board (and a very restrictive overdraft facility!). The board will be nervous about the depth of our support for the Saints and them. There might not be any big signings. Players will be let go. The team will be young and cheap (like most divisin 1 teams, excluding money-bags Leicester). Hmmm exactly like last year. But getting rid of Lowe has meant relegation and because of the lack of preparation and the points penalty, an extra season down.

My vote is with time travel! Or failing that, I support the new board whoever they are and support the Saints.

The next couple of days are going to be hell as a fan. But at least if someone takes over at the last minute the people left at the club will be true & loyal to the club or else they would of already walked. Its a good time to take over a club with no thought about if people are their for cash only not the club. Funny how i read Svenson has walked a real hero

Better news in the Echo today - in print but not yet online. The Swiss group and another international group are 'confident of striking a deal'. The Swiss group have nearly completed due diligence and are drawing up contracts.

Too early to be optimistic after the le Tis debacle, but like any Saints fan 3-0 down with 10 minutes to go I think 'Maybe. Just maybe.....'

lady saint was pretty well spot on about the way people express thier views, in the majority of cases no malice just frustration. There is nothing we can do now I think except to say if any body can help this club please do so and hopefully all these letters posted will be put into season tickets or regular ticket buyers to st mary,s. I do believe the FL need to look and alter in some way the penalties and proceedures of thier rules. There are differant circumstances in every case(not just sfc)and common sense as well as justice needs to be seen to be done as well as applied. Here,s hoping for a result all saints fans want our football club up and running ounce again, wouldn,t it be great being stuck on the m3 trying to get to a home game ,if only that were to happen.

100% NO.

As I keep telling people the dark-lord was telling somebody on the London Underground FIVE WEEKS BEFORE the 10 point deadline that we "In effect already in Admin" BUT HE WAITED until after that date to get the -10pts carried over to this season.

The last few days have shown the problems that has generated, but he saw that as his only hope of regaining control.
Remember you are dealing with the man with the biggest EGO in the world here, who would take -25 every season just to say in control.

THOUSANDS WILL stay away next season if he returns (we might even get as lowe as the Skates with 2,731 in Sept 2000) and it unlikely that NU / Barclays would see any of the "add-ons" (return to higher leagues etc.).

THEREFORE THEY (NU/Barclays) will get more by "folding" the club.

It's a no-brainer - although clearly at least one without a brain seeks to disprove that.

Either no Saints FC or a Saints FC with a chairman who half the supporters despise and the other half couldn't care about.

Of course, you would take Saints FC survival with RL or anyone else. Chairmen come and go - Christ, I've seen enough - but once the club has gone it's gone. The new Wimbledon isn't Wimbledon. A new Saints won't be the team that won the FA cup and came second in the first division. A new Saints won't be the team that LT, Micky Channon and Kev played for.

There is only one Saints FC. Hopefully the Swiss Consortium will save us. But if not I would take Lowe or (heaven help me) Crouch over extinction. And if people want to boycott the team because of the chairman then Henry V couldn't have put it better: "gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."
