Nurse fought to save stab victim Neil Hampson’s life

A NURSE has described the dramatic moment she battled to save the life of a man fatally stabbed at a Southampton house party.

Emma Sullivan was giving evidence at the trial of Tony Wilkinson, who is accused of murdering Neil Hampson, known as “Bones”.

A jury at Winchester Crown Court heard how the trained first aider desperately tried to save Mr Hampson’s life by giving him CPR moments after he was repeatedly stabbed in the throat with a 12in blade at Havre Towers in Weston.

The operating theatre assistant said: “I heard screaming and shouting and I heard someone say call for an ambulance.

“I looked out and I saw Bones in the corner not looking very good. He just slid down and collapsed on the floor. There was blood everywhere. On the walls, on the floor and on people’s clothes. His left ear was cut clean in half and he was bleeding from his eyes, his ears, lots of different places.

“Everyone was panicking.

He stopped breathing and went blue. I thought he died. I gave him CPR to bring him back and he started breathing again. I wanted to save his life.”

The court heard how Mr Hampson, 32, of Magnolia Road, Merry Oak, had joined around 20 other guests at the flat on International Way after celebrating the 21st birthday of Danielle Gibbon earlier that evening in November 2007.

Also giving evidence at the trial was Vickie Rooke who said Wilkinson had been pushed out of former girlfriend Isla Jarvis’s flat moments after the stabbing.

Miss Rooke said: “Isla was trying to get her boyfriend out of her house because he was causing all this trouble. He was asking her to find his coat and she pushed him out of the door.”

Vickie said she saw Wilkinson with a 12in-long sheath knife in his hand just before leaving the flat.

The two girls continued to administer chest compressions and CPR until the paramedics arrived.

Mr Hampson was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he died of multiple stab wounds around 90 minutes later.

Wilkinson, 28, of Merrow Avenue, Poole, denies murdering Mr Hampson.

He admitted, in the aftermath of the incident, charges of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, burglary, theft of a car and criminal damage to that vehicle.
