School is flying the green flag

A SOUTHAMPTON school is celebrating its green credentials after it was awarded eco-school silver status.

King Edward VI School is now working towards the top accolade of green flag status, through an international scheme helping embed environmentally- friendly principles into school life.

The Kellett Road school has a dedicated green team of pupils and staff who have supported several national initiatives, including National Bike Week and next Saturday’s first-ever Green Britain Day.

Good for them, however they were totally disinterested when I tried to get them involved in a scheme to help disadvantaged kids in Shirley.

no they weren't... they already have a reading scheme where they help disadvantaged children learn to love reading at school, and they have created a community garden in Shirley for everyone, and they have a summer camp where they take disadvantaged children on holiday in Swanage so I think they do quite enough already, so there...

so they should considering they don't pay VAT on purchases due to their dubious charitable status- I thought the government was going to abolish that in 1997.

perhaps you'd also like to consider the benefit of full and part bursaries to allow local children to attend the school without paying any fees. Not to mention the net benefit to the state system of having one thousand less pupils to educate yet with their parents paying more then their fair share of taxes with no tax relief on the fees- effectively paying for a place in a state school for their child yet not using it up.

The school does offer some bursaries, but they only pay full fees if you have a household income of less than £14,000 and no capital assets. So it is really not open to all, and never has been. More than that, how do you think someone whose parent earns £15,000 a year feels when all of their friends have swimming pools, a boat or a pony and two or three foreign holidays a year? It takes in upper middle class kids and educates them to be middle managers and lawyers. And yes they do do some things for charity, but in a paternalistsic them and us kind of way.

You certainly are Vconfused. I am a student at the school, and in my whole year group there is one person who has a swimming pool. It's not Eton, for crying out loud! There are true mix of people there. In all honesty, unless you earn under £14,000 a year you don't really need a bursary. The fact of the matter is that it is a PRIVATE school. As these go, it is very well rounded and not at all biased towards children with richer parents. I myself happen to be one of the pupils whose parents have a little less money than others, and quite honestly I wouldn't notice the difference. As to your attitude towards the charity performed by the school, I think you are totally wrong and deluded. Either you want us to help in the community or you don't, and your attitude towards what we do totally disgusts me.

Personally I would rather your school paid tax fairly as all the state schools have to. Then the revenue raised could be put into 'good works'.

Also, if KES was so committed to Southampton why is it supplimenting its income letting their sports ground to Pompey? a disgrace.

Had the school not gone private it would have closed 30 years ago when it lost Grammar status.

Maybe KES has changed. When I was there it was easy to spot the students on assisted places. They didn't go to the US every summer and come back from most holidays with circles round their eyes where they have been skiing. I could prob name every person on an assisted place or bursary in my year. KES always said they offered a rounded education. But the fact while I was there was that they didn't. The careers advice and pastoral support was non-existent, and the teaching incredibly old fashioned. And someone on £14,000 a year cannot afford school fees - the school could and should be more generous if it really wants to offer a 'rounded' educational experience, and keep its charitable status.

I'm sure that it's very noble to pay for a group of disadvantaged kids to go 40 miles to Swanage. Would the school fund the trips they take overseas? I doubt it. I'm afraid they are going to have to justify their charitable status if they want to take money from the taxpayer.
