Last ditch attempt to hijack Saints deal

Keith Harris Keith Harris

RIVAL bidders for the Saints are this morning still trying to hijack the Swiss deal for the club.

The worldwide financial group behind the bid have been frantically trying to contact administrator Mark Fry as the Markus Liebherr bid looks close to completion.

Having splashed out vast amounts in legal fees, the group are desperate to complete a deal themselves - and even asked the Daily Echo's sports team if they had any other contacts for Mark Fry.

Last week the worldwide financial services group enlisted the help of former Football League chairman Keith Harris to aid them seal the deal.

Harris is chairman of Saints’ financial advisors Seymour Pierce and is well known in the game for his work in takeovers at clubs, including introducing Roman Abramovich to Chelsea six years ago.

He also advised Michael Wilde on his takeover of Saints in 2006.

Harris has been talking to Fry and Saints’ creditors for the best part of a week, including a breakfast appointment on Monday morning and another meeting lasting several hours yesterday afternoon.

Lawyers and representatives of the worldwide financial group have been left incredulous at the events of the past few days.

On several occasions they have believed they were in a good position to complete the deal, only to be left frustrated as another deadline has passed.

Sources close to the group insist they have put forward a solid business plan to help take Saints forward in the next few years, and have got an experienced structure in place – on and off the field – to hit the ground running with if they were to complete a deal.

As revealed in the Echo on Monday, they also believe they have put in a higher bid.

The Echo understands that Fry is expecting the final transfer of money regarding Liebherr’s bid to take place within hours and a deal to be completed.

But the worldwide financial group are annoyed that they have already put their cash in an account ready to be accessed on completion of a deal.

And as of this lunchtime they were still attempting to liase with Fry, with a view to potentially hijacking the Swiss bid.

The Echo also understands that the group could even be prepared to write to the Football League to complain if Liebherr’s takeover goes through.

why is NOTHING ever simple where Saints are concerned? First Crouch lets the cat out of the bag about the set-up of the holding company and we get slapped a 10-point penalty, then there's the duping of MLT and the whole Pinnacle debacle, now the Swiss deal is rolling away... What next?
Please let it be over and done soon. Either that or let this great club die with dignity, rather than prolong this unseemly scrum to pick over the bones.... I, for one, can't take much more of this.

Le Tissier's Nose, look up the definition of Administration in Wikipedia, (http://en.wikipedia

tion_(law)). As you can see from that Fry doesn't represent you, me, the club, the players, the fans or Uncle Tom Cobbley and all. He represents the creditors who were owed money when SLH went into administration. He has to get them the best value by keeping the company going, or wind it up and realise the best value for the assets. He is not being "greedy", he is doing his legal duty by the creditors. Leave the poor bloke alone, he's been doing a sterling job and, within the limits of his legal role, he has been very good to the club I think.

I really hope this ends today...... Everyone has had the chance to complete.... Now if the Markus L is ready and willing, get the deal done. What really worries me is if the Creditors at the last minute insist that the other bids are reconsidered if they are offering more money.... I guess they can do that and at the end of the day they want as much cash back as they can get.

Tirau Dan (NZL) says...

I do believe the admin team are well placed to analyse the fairness of accepting one or other of the deals. They will also ensure that the league are happy with the bid they accept.

We know nothing of who Keith Harris is representing.

I'm confident that Markus Liebherr will will draw a line with Mark Fry which he will not not to cross.

That line will ensure that any deal he makes with the creditors and the league will stick fast against any possible appeal from The World Wide Financial Group.

The WWFG could for all we know be someone with brilliant credentials that would represent us very well.

The very last thing we want is for the deal to close in circumstances that could hold up the club through any legal appeal process.

My faith at this stage remains solidly with Begbies Traynor resolve to close the Swiss Deal for us.

No doubt they would want someone like Lowe to look after their purse strings at the club if it did go through. No no no!!!!

I like the Swiss bid as they have connections with the City...it's a good fit and Fry knows it which is why he's probably trying to get it done without speaking to this other group again.

There remains so much about this whole affair that the public simply don't know about.

I doubt the creditors will be paid off in full, so a level of debt will remain and there will probably be a CVA agreeing to the way forward. The creditors have to judge which buyer presents the least risk. It's not Fry's call, he worsk for the creditors. I have a good gut feel for the Swiss, but that isn't based on any tangible facts. It's just that I want it all resolved.

100% agree
You may be right, but personally I believe the whole process could have been managed a lot lot better. Unrealistic deadlines were set and publicised, mixed messages coming out about confidence regarding potential deals with investors (he said he was confident Fialka’s wealth was genuine when maybe in hindsight it would have been better to keep that opinion to himself). I'm sure he is not totally to blame however he is the figurehead and the one we/I look to for confidence that there is/was an end in site.

Like you, I just want it sorted for the club I love. I want to buy my season ticket and look forward to the season ahead.

Ultimately my point is that things have been so messy that we are now a stones throw from the season starting and we are that close to sealing a deal.....we don't need/want it potentially jeopardised again at the 11th hour.

Hopefully its sorted today.

Why are you blaming MF????

This article states that the WFG have put in a higher bid. Therefore, if MF only wanted the highest bid for the club he would accept the WFG's offer.

He also has a responsibility for ensuring that he accepts the best offer likely to (a) keep the company from going back into administration in a few months/years time and (b) will be able to take the company forward successfully.

Things like this take time and sometimes you are in the hands of other people - the Football League, Creditors, Banks etc. - and therefore all you (MF) can do is wait.

He can't totally ignore other bidders, in case his chosen option falls through, just like the Pinnacle deal did. So he has to keep them interested and hear what they have to say or offer.

But now it seems that MF IS trying to finalise the Swiss deal quickly by virtue of the fact that he seems to have "gone to ground" and is not taking the WFG's calls etc.

Unless you know with certainty that MF is stalling on any deal to get Saints out of administration, I don't think you should be criticising him publicly!

We all know the length of time this is taking is frustrating. But we have to be patient. Like I said, things are in the hands of other people as well as ourselves.

Spot on. This says it all.

Doesn't help with the frustration though does it?

Patience is the key word.

Hang on here you doubters, Keith Harris was part of the confederacy that helped Michael Wilde become chairman. You remember with Lawrie McMenemy, the Echo, Leon Crouch, Mary Corbett, Keith Wiseman and company. Can there seriously be true Saints fans out there who believe that he would not be acting in the Saints’ best interests.
To do so would be to doubt the integrity of Lawrie, the Echo, Leon, Mary and Keith, among the many others who helped oust Rupert.

That's the bit I don't like, Harris has waited and waited until the last minute I feel to find out what the Swiss price was, his group must have bettered the Swiss price then it's down to Mr Fry to act in the best interest of the creditors, his must inform the creditors of the better offer and wait for the creditors instructions. I hope I'm wrong and this saga will end today, with the Swiss taking over by lunchtime, My fingers are crossed

Putting more money up front in the deal will not necessarily impress the administrators who have said all along they will act according to the long term security or the club. The creditors will be paid what they are owed. I understand that when you buy a company in debt the creditors just sign off on how and when they will get their money as they have a stake in the business. These guys are paying about 12.5m for a business which is 30m in debt. The total for the deal is about 42.5m. A debt free club without admin would be worth almost twice that. An accountant may correct that.

Mark Fry will cut the deal safely and fairly in the eyes of the creditors and the league. When it's done and dusted the league will lift administration. and we can celebrate as the new owner "hits the ground running".

I know what you are saying.
I did not have shares but I have the upmost respect and sympathy for those that did. They saw a long term future for Saints and made their financial commitment to it.
How ironic that people talked before about how it would be good if Saints fans were more structurally incorporated in the club like Barcelona and yet the nearest mechanisms and arrangements we have (Saints Trust and share ownership) have been unpopular and now ripped up by administration.

Whilst it may work out that the club becomes financially stronger because of the administration - we have beaten down our debts to creditors, got in a new owner that might not have come for a fairer price out of administration - it is regrettable that it could not have been achieved more honourably. It is a good thing that the Football League had not changed the rules earlier and came down on us like a ton of bricks.
But having said that, looking forward to next season as I always do (including last year).

Even if you’re loosing a game, you can take comfort from the knowledge that it will end sometime; ninety minutes; extra time; sometime. But this nightmare just keeps going on and on and on!

As long as the Batchelor bid is unsuccessful then we can be cheered with having some sort of a chance of survival. If they succeed then it really would be light out at St. Mary's.

From the limited knowledge at our disposal, it would appear the Swiss bid is best suited to our needs. Whilst, they may be an unknown quantity in the UK football scene, they have at least a tentative connection with the Port of Southampton. (I rather like red & white stripes on the dock-cranes!).

The Keith Harris bid also seems not without it’s advantages. One of which is that the bidders are familiar with the set-up of British football and so will not be unaware of what will be required to SFC back to the Championship. (Best to let our return to the Premiership remain an aspiration for the moment). However, it seems this group is also well known to some of the former board.

Though to be honest, I would much prefer a total clean sheet. Southampton FC, over the past decade or so, surely has had enough of internecine warfare, where backbiting, character assassination, innuendo, petty jealousies and smearing were the order of day.

Mark Fry has an unenviable job, for whatever the outcome someone is going to be displeased. It could very well be us, the fans and supporters, for we are rightly nowhere on his list of priorities.

And that may be no bad thing! Humility is what is needed we’ve seen what damage hubris brings!

I mean Kiwi's have hearts as big as a Moa Bird.

The Moa was a NZ native carnivorous bird like a 15ft high emu.

I just hope the deal comes home to roost so we can all go **** a hoot.

By the way I love great tits grey tits blue tits and those little tits that play with the milk tops. Hope this doesn't go tits up.

LOL... get with the bird ... I'm sure it will go through as Mr Liebherr is a wise old owl.
Go to bed Dan, before you go cuckoo, don't count your chicken's before they hatch, You need some sleep, or you will be as dead as dodo, you will wake to find the phoenix has risen from the ashes, talking of ashes england are 90-3,
all of you seem to be having a lark, with nothing to crow about but liebherr and cranes. robin pheasants stole my albatross for an eagle

Just heard a horrible rumour that maybe Swiss man is thinking about walking away due to the Overseas bidders talking about moaning to the FL about not winning their bid. Childish, but it may yet cause us to lose what looks like a good deal for us. This apparently is why there has been no announcement yet.
I hope your wrong and I'm right. Can't take much more. Off to SMS now to see what is happening. It's doing my head in.
I too hope I am wrong mate. If you going to SMS let us on here know if theres is any activity. Will put us stuck at work out of our misery.

Don't let this other group in for God's sake.If they're that desperate that they have to ask the Echo if they have any more contacts for Mr Fry what does that say about 'em, If you're thinking about spending millions on something, you should at least know how to contact the seller. It seems to spell sloppiness and God knows we've all had enough of that over the last few years. Saints forever, and bring in the Swiss. COYRs.
Sorry guys, it was me. I rang up the echo pretending to represent the Worldwide Financial Group, and asked for Fry's contact numbers.

In reality, of course, I trade in second-hand panties.

It's quite easy to fool the echo, given that they only employ fools and illiterates.

Joking aside, isn't it amazing how any mention of "Saints" on the Echo site will attract hundreds of comments? Not saying it's a good or bad thing, just pointing out that all of a sudden everyone's got an opinion on it, just because the Echo dangles some snippet in front of y'all
If the echo had an open saints forum thread for us to chat and post on we'd use them but attaching them to stories works.

These threads give us a chance to bounce thoughts and feeling off like minded ppl

It isn't just because they dangle news in front of us, it's because we're interested and most of us care very much about Saints.

I've been away from soton for many years but I'll tell you what... Saints is Blood... you really feel it even more when you've been away for a while.

I'm working at my pc at home some of the time and sometimes with the telly on too... handy and fun too

If you don't get too carried away it's fun and informative.
Same here, watching the Ashes whilst awaiting news, supposed to working at home.

I hope my boss aint doing the same, LOL ,England are 44 -1

SW mass-hurt Are the Echo predicting something?
After observing the patterns of security words for a while, I've come to the conclusion that they're farmed from word-associations run against the comments themselves, as well as the stories.

Experiment: if we all put the name of a bird in all posts on this thread, and my theory is correct, the word "bird" will come up in the captcha at some point, for someone
This old mush from St Marys has been counting "chickens" for weeks.

The banks have been open for a fair while today. Some websites lead us to believe the deal had been signed but the money transfer had to be made this morning.

I know I'm tired out.. the stuffing has been knocked out of this old bird.. but I hope this deal isn't as dead as a Dodo.

Yep it's after midnight again and no roosters crowing. Maybe the messenger pigeon got shot.

The brandy will have to wait again.

One last look at a video of Oh When The Saints go Marching in by Danny Kay and Satchmo... brilliant... thanks Roger....

It's doing everybody's head in.

But consider for a moment .. The Swiss gentleman and his family didn't get that rich by being childish and walking away from business opportunities. This latest story about last minute bids is a puff based on a call to the Echo. Shame on them for blowing it up so much.

It's up to the creditors now. They need to agree a sum to accept now and agree the terms for the future on any outstanding debt. Once that is done and completed there will be an announcement. Nobody on here has any idea when that will be.

Who knows .. thirty seconds from now it might all be announced .. I wish
