Race is Wellow's way of doing something

MEMBERS of a Hampshire village have banded together in support of a local couple both diagnosed with cancer within a matter of months.

Tamatha Ryan and her friends from Wellow are taking part in tomorrow’s Race for Life in Southampton to raise more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The ladies – who call themselves the Wellow Weirdos – met when their children started at Wellow School and have been close friends ever since.

“It was such a shock when our friends were diagnosed with cancer,” said mum-of-four Tamatha, who has been busy recruiting female members of the village to join her for the 5k event on Southampton Common. We wanted to do something to show how much we admire them and to show our love and support for them.

“I think a lot of us felt helpless, and this is our way of doing something.”

Dressed as Turkish belly dancers the Wellow Weirdos, who range in age from seven to 45, are sure to stand out from the crowd on Sunday. “We’ve gone for the noisiest, jangliest costumes we could find,” said Tamatha, 40. “And we’ve chosen blue to match the colours of Cancer Research UK.”
