SOUTHAMPTON mayor Liz Mizon will make history on tomorrow when she takes part in the city's annual race for life.

She is the first city mayor to take part in the 5km route around Southampton Common since the women's event started 16 years ago.

Councillor Mizon was motivated don her trainers and raise money after her aunt died of cancer.

"I am going to do it with some friends. I am more of a walker and a cyclist than a runner so we will run a minute and then walk four minutes," she said.

Her involvement comes ahead of the launch of her "Good Neighbour Award" challenge to encourage people to become better neighbours and help the wider community.

Cllr Mizon said she hoped to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK. Anyone who would like to make a donation should call the Mayor's parlour on 023 8022 3855
