Pompey shirtless as maker goes under

Canterbury’s contract with Pompey got off to a good start, but it has ended in failure. Canterbury’s contract with Pompey got off to a good start, but it has ended in failure.

THE maker of Portsmouth FC’s shirt and kit for Hampshire Cricket has collapsed.

It means Pompey face a desperate search for a new shirt manufacturer less than a month before the start of the new Premiership season.

The European trading arm of New Zealand’s Canterbury Group has called in administrators KPMG as a result of “difficult trading”.

The firm, best known for rugby shirts, has made 72 staff in its Cheshire base redundant.

All sponsorship contracts in Canterbury Europe Limited have been terminated as a result of the administration, and the affected clubs will rank as unsecured creditors in relation to any amounts they were owed for the remainder of the contract.

None of the contracts were worth more than £1m and most were closer to £100,000.

David Costley-Wood, partner at KPMG Restructuring, said: “This administration has been the culmination of difficult trading, following a period in which Canterbury Europe Limited had unsuccessfully tried to expand into new areas.”

The company has also been hit by the weakening of the pound, as it imports its goods from the Far East.

“The European business will continue to trade under the administration whilst we try to find a buyer for the business and assets.

“The global brand and trademarks are not affected by the administration of the European business and we understand that the owners of the Canterbury Group are looking for a potential acquirer or new investor to lead the next stage of Canterbury’s development.”

As they are in administration, I assume that, like Saints when they were in a similar situation, they will still be trading!

If Pompey are desperate they could order a batch of shirts from the local JJB! I read the other day that the South African arm of CCC had gone under- it seems they couldn't take on the might of Nike and Adidas

Much I was sorry Canterbury went bust down here in NZ I never supported their move to manufacture in China.

Now I find they've been making skate shirts I can't help grin.

If you want NZ manufactured try Swazi.. but please not for pompey.

They could always paint on a kit before each game using a mixture of fish paste and octupus ink. They'd even smell the part then!!!

Portsmouth FC have stated that they have received their shirts for the squad for the season, with sufficient replica shirts available.
It will not affect their Premier League status!

yeah right. A few years back Motherwell were having to buy long sleeve replica shirts off fans because their supplier let them down. Wait until January when the kits are knackered and can't be washed any more.
