Alan Pardew's arrival is a statement of real intent for Southampton

Alan Pardew celebrates his promotion with West Ham Alan Pardew celebrates his promotion with West Ham

THE appointment of Alan Pardew as Saints’ first manager under Markus Liebherr signals a clear statement of intent.

Both from the new owner and the team’s latest boss himself.

That statement is quite simple – we believe we can get this club back to the top flight and are in this for the long haul.

Pardew’s track record shows promotions from both the Championship and League One with West Ham and Reading respectively.

Add to that other play-off heartaches – one each with the Hammers and the Royals – and it is clear the man knows what it takes to build a team that can compete in the lower divisions over a long and hard season.

But he has also tasted the high life as well, managing in the Premier League and even guiding West Ham to an FA Cup final.

He was just seconds away from lifting the FA Cup in 2006 when Steven Gerrard lashed in a spectacular late equaliser for Liverpool, who went on to win a penalty shoot-out.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

The fact that Saints have attracted Pardew and he has taken on the job says a lot about both the hirer and their new employee.

From the point of view of Saints’ new board, well they pretty much could have appointed anybody as manager – save perhaps Rupert Lowe – and got away with it.

The new owner and his men are the people who saved the club, their stock is high and – as such – whoever they appointed would have been given a fair crack.

In some cases it would take less of a bad spell than others for the grumbles to start reverberating round St Mary’s, but nonetheless the way was clear.

But by going for Pardew they have trodden a careful path that is between a high profile manager whose name will attract players to follow him and a guy who also has the nous and experience necessary at that level.

With Lieberhrr’s cash behind them, the board could have got in any number of big names. But Pardew is a neat balancing act between the leadership and orangisation required to turn around Saints’ fortunes and a man who, further down the line, is capable of managing at the top level if he can get them back there.

It is an appointment that makes sense.

There have been a few managers who have felt League One is a bit beneath them, even at a massive club like Saints.

Pardew, who probably would have got a job in a higher league given time, clearly does not believe that.

He must see the potential.

This is as close to a no lose situation as you get in football.

First season you have few expectations to manage due to the ten point deduction.

Though obviously success in the first campaign would be great, the most important thing is for progress to be made.

That gives you the breathing space of a year, and three transfer windows, to build a squad ready to get promoted in season two.

Few jobs can match that for time in which to work.

Then you have the money – not only the personal package, which will no doubt be decent, but the cash that will be committed in the transfer market.

Even with sensible spending, promised to be at ‘the appropriate level’, it should help oil the wheels of success.

Saints is a club that now cannot fall any further and so the only way is up.

Even though a manager should achieve success in these circumstances, another promotion on the CV is great.

Then, assuming Liebherr’s long term commitment remains in place, you have the chance to take the club all the way back to the Premier League with more money to get to the top flight.

That is all in the future.

But it just underlines that it is a long term job because you are highly likely to need to spend two seasons in League One.

The fact Pardew has committed to that, and the new board have asked him to, shows this is not a plan for a year or two.

Instead it’s much further in the future.

Yes, I agree this is a good balanced article. We have been given a very significant lifline and now we have to try to be patient (not easy) and support the rebuild of the club particulary on the field.

Lets hope the ground really is full tomorrow and that it continues throughout the season - this owner and his team really deserves our support (even if the going gets tough).

This must be first for The Echo this year, an article that actually talks some sense (rather than the rubbish of the last 2 months they've made up just to sell papers or get hits on the website, as this is not a gage of good journalism) !! Well done, now try and keep it up please. We need a local paper that supports the Saints. Yes tell it how it is (and that’s not just re hashing a story from your own message boards when you’ve got no story !). We need you to stop this self indulgent propaganda and spin for the sake of your own sales or number ratings on these message boards. For once support the Saints as your media coverage can influence attitude and we need everyone pulling in the same direction. From now on ! Good luck Alan Pardew, I believe you’re the right man for the job at this point in time. COYR

Been a success at many clubs. Charlton was a no-win for him. No Cash, in free-fall and demoralised team.

We are a L1 team and attracting a manager with both credentials in the lower leagues AND top-flight is great news.

Charlton in the CCC was completely his own team so low morale was completely down to him if anyone. Not completely to blame of course but a huge huge chuck. His ego goes before anything i'm afraid.

I think if we can have a good start to the season and eat the 10 point deficit up quickly, I think there is a good chance of play offs. I mentioned in amother story that if (and it is a big if) we find ourselves top half of table at Xmas within touching distance of playoffs, we might be able to attract decent players in the Jan transfer window which could help with a play off push. Remember Leeds just missed out on automatic promotion from this leage with a 15 point deficit!

I truly believe our return to the big time will be as dramatic as our fall from grace.

If we all keep the faith, support AP and the team, we will achieve what we and ML set out to achieve, but we also need to be realistic that if we don't make playoffs this year, at least we are building a team for a promotion push in 2010/11. (Apologies if this sounds contradicting but I hope you know what I mean!)

Personally on todays squad it is totally unrealistic and maybe even fighting off relegation if we didnt strenthen.
I suppose it will all depend on who AP brings in. If he spends wisely on good players and mix with the good we already have and a good downwind its not totally unrealistic.
Lets hope eh!

Tough call but it should be possible. Automatic promotion would be an unrealistic goal before we can see how things go but by Christmas it should be clearer.

I'm always optimistic at this time of year so fingers crossed for a good start in August to get rid of the deficit then push on to year end.

I foresee at least three additions to the current squad, probably Murty possibly Euell and John but no major spending before the end of August. If Thomas can stay fit and Perry doesn't get crocked the bak four should be solid. They would last this season but not next so long tern investment in the youngsters is still needed.

Can't wait for 3:00 tomorrow.

Playoffs are as likely as a relegation battle. If you look at last years table there isn’t much between them.

I prefer to be optimistic and say that we will get to the playoffs. I am not sure that we will be able to compete with Leeds, Norwich and Charlton until we get some new players (perhaps in January) but realistically as soon as we get into our stride there are not many teams that we couldn’t expect to beat in this division.

Our main challenge will be to learn to play two very different styles of football. Home and away conditions are likely to be chalk and cheese. If Bristol Rovers Pitch is any sort of benchmark then we are going to have to throw a passing game out of the window for away fixtures.

At home we will need to take advantage of the pitch and play attractive and entertaining football. The only other option would be to damage the pitch!

not interested mate, we were worried when Strachan took over and he certainly was a success, Pardew has got his errors out the way now, mainly joining a club already doomed. Saints is a a totally different proposition, he has money, backing of the fans and chairman, low expectations to begin with.

For me the appointment of AP neither over-whelmed nor under-whelmed me. A solid appointment with a three year remit designed to get us out of L1 at the first or second attempt and then mid table in the Championship. We definitely need some experienced operators this year, let's hope AP has the contacts to get them in. Last season's bottom playoff team lost 14 games all season so we can only really lose 10 to be in with a shout.

Charletons team had millions spent on them and lost how many games on the trot to take them down. No Excuses and no respect in that.. Certain players at Saints did that to us and did it to Mark Wotte.

At Saints it wasn't Mark Wotte it was the key players that just didn't have what it takes when the pressure was on. One of them has gone to Plymouth.

Mistakes made by Alan will have been learned the hard way. He doesn't seem to me to be the sort of guy that will tolerate people letting him down or telling him what to do let alone hard nuts from the stands. Charleton is history.

We have some very promising young players with a few experienced lads in the core. Alan will tighten and mould from the back and add a someone up front for the fans to scream and shout for.

Thats probably all he'll do in the first year and that may get us to the play-offs.

Whatever he does or does not do this whole season : This is a new era for Saints with a clean slate for Alan!
He needs and must demand 110% positivity from his coaching staff to the board and from the fans.

The positivity is there at the moment, it's in the air and the expectations... feel it, believe in it and for goodness sake get out there and cheer loud and proud.

Go for it Alan you're the man!

I have read all of the posts on all the threads, yes there is new optimism in Southampton and also the far flung, we will be patient and yes we will support our team and I mean from the top (boardroom, manager and the team) to the bottom (supporters) united in our belief that we are finally on the right road and going in the right direction, as fans we have to be very patient, it will not happen overnight, we will have times that we will moan about, that is what makes football what it is, just remember where we were going in the last few years (down) and even further down, so far this management team has done just about everything right, so far, as I have said there will be setbacks but that is inevetible, I believe that this management will only get better and better and that the city will be proud of it's football club and everything that goes with that, it has been said in many walks of life that you have to suffer before you get rewards, now bring it on, we have the makings to be great once again.
