STEPHEN Fry is doing it. Phillip Schofield is doing it. Many people do it every day. And now The Gazette is getting in on the act.

So what is it? The answer is Twitter.

Twitter is an Internet phenomenon that has taken cyberspace by storm. Last month, Twitter officially became the UK’s fastest-growing website.

It is the latest champion of what is known as social networking, which quite simply is people getting in touch online and sharing information, news and opinions instantly.

The Twitter craze is said to have tens of millions of users, including celebrities who use “tweets” to keep their followers updated on their activities.

And now The Gazette will be breaking news, sport, business and entertainment on its Twitter feed.

Editor Mark Jones said: “The Gazette presence on Twitter helps even more people keep up with the latest news from our website, as well as making it easier for web users to get in touch with us.

“We’re very excited about using it to get important stories about what is going on in our local communities out to a wider audience.”

Each update is limited to just 140 characters – slightly less than a text message – and will include details of all the latest Gazette headlines along with links, photos and videos.

Twitter can even be accessed by mobile phone so you can stay in touch with the latest Basingstoke goings-on while on the move. To follow The Gazette on Twitter visit twitter.com and follow @BasGazette.
