A CAR mounted a pavement, knocked down a pedestrian and ploughed into a Hampshire florist’s shop.

The blue Mazda, driven by an 83-year-old woman, went out of control and ended up embedded in the front of The Flower Shop in Fryern Arcade, Chandler’s Ford, at 11.42am today.

An 86-year-old female pedestrian has been taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester with suspected fractured pelvis and leg, police said.

The driver and a female passenger, also aged 83, were treated for shock at the scene.

Inspector Brian Gravenor, of Hampshire Police, said: "After seeing the extent of the damage, I was surprised that the people in the car were not more severely injured. It shows that the car was designed to withstand damage.

"However it is the pedestrian involved in the accident that we are most worried about. She has been taken to hospital and could remain there for some time."

He added that he believed the cost of repairing the damage to the shop would run into thousands of pounds.
