Thornhill project under threat

A FLAGSHIP housing project that would see part of a Southampton estate bulldozed has been dealt a blow after the Government slashed its funding.

Almost £2m of funding towards a scheme to knock down part of the Thornhill estate to build new shops and more than 100 homes is now uncertain.

Housing minister John Healey unexpectedly announced the cut just days before Southampton City Council appointed Barratt and First Wessex to carry out the £14m Hinkler Parade regeneration project.

Hinkler Parade was due to get £1.9m next year from a £9.4m fund for housing growth in south Hampshire, which has been cut to £5.3m. Other projects in Gosport and Portsmouth were also due to get a slice of the cash.

Fareham council leader Sean Woodward, chairman of the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) which hands out the cash, said: “It will potentially kill off these projects. The whole vision of PUSH is targeted for the regeneration of Southampton and Portsmouth. This is a kick in the teeth.

“I am particularly disappointed that the secretary of state, Southampton MP John Denham, has not recognised the importance of Government funding support for our ambitious plans to tackle the provision of housing, employment and infrastructure in south Hampshire.”

Southampton City Council finance spokesman Councillor Jeremy Moulton said: “South-ampton is having to take thousands of new homes yet our local MP is slashing the essential funding to provide the infrastructure to support them.”

A decision on which PUSH projects will have their funding cut will be made in November.

Meanwhile Mr Healey has invited councils across the country to bid for cash from a £1.5 billion fund to build 20,000 new affordable homes over this year and next.

Just shows where Denham's loyalties lie. How a local MP cannot support a local project is beyond me-perhaps there was nothing in it for him!

what more do you expect from any self serving MP?

we have no democracy, look at Ireland. they voted no to europe so the european union wait a couple of years and then make tham vote again until they like the answer.

like all MP's once they are in parliament they forget who they were voted in by and who they are meant to support. Party politics is king over locals. should get a chance to show your displeasure next year.

Supports projects his constituants don't want ? (fluoride in our

We know who we DON'T want as our next MP

Every couple of weeks we hear about a wonderful new housing/shopping/
school development to be built in Southampton, and every couple of weeks a development is postponed or abandoned. Little surprise then that I take news of any proposed new development with a pinch of salt.

I know that this development will happen, this is the Echo doing it's usual scaremongering stories.
I am a Thornhill resident and I know the council would not have paid residents to move out, if they were not certain it would happen.

Then they should stop all the housing projects until such time as they can afford the infrastructure to support them.

How about a compromise where the Thornhill estate is bulldozed but no further development takes place.

Saves money, gets rid of a slum area and creates a nice space ? Genius, even if I do say so myself.

F**K off you dinlo. Portswood aint all that either, oh actually must be good it has a bingo hall...
No need to be so rude young lady, I expect from your neanderthal response you are from this region ?

I think most people would agree that we coudl all do without Thronhill and it's residents.
Agreed there is no need for the swearing, but if you knew what you were talking about Keith, allmove4ward2geva would not need to have responded the way they did.

If you intend to insult people from an area of Southampton then at least have the decency to spell it correctly, Thronhill is where?

You obviously have not seen Thornhill recently Keith, because if you crawled out from under rock once in while, you would know how many improvements have been made to the estate by the residents living there.

You may think all council estate residents are scum, but you very much mistaken,

The £1.9 million will be found from elsewhere, the council has invested too much money for it to go down the pan.

It will happen.

I live in Thornhill , and I'm proud to say I do.

The only surrprise on the table is that people have taken so despairingly long to find out what John Denham is like. He has presided over a Universities Department, now abandoned, which was intent on cutting places, funding and opportunities and now he is presiding over the same sort of thing with Communities. In the meantime making use of £200,000 pa in pay and allowances. Next time possibly people would care to vote for a nodding dog; that might be more use. The Palace of Westminster is a finished institution altogether in our society.

No i dont agree.
If the money was promised then it should be forthcoming.

Although the council could still sell a few more treasures from the art gallery to make up the shortfall if there is one.

The same any government, this is usual practice, regardless of who it is.

It's not the 1st time it's happened to good people of Thornhill, look at the fiasco with LSC and Itchen College, unfortunatly for the college they won't get outside funding for their development so I believe that will be scrapped, unlike this project.

What's the matter Keith? You seem to have gone a tad quiet, maybe it's because you have been embarrassed by one of the Thornhill scumbags?

Kieth I have lived in Thornhill for 26 years and I am very proud to say so. Mostof the residents there are very polite and harmless. Yes there is a brainless few but they are in the minority, and this applies to ALL areas.

People like you have obviously never been to the area and listen to the 'word' on the street.

It has been cleaned up a great deal, a lot of the bad eggs have moved to other areas, including Portswood.

Get your facts right before you come on here and spout your mouth off about us being in a slum.

I have a very good job in an important position for an international organisation and being from Thornhill has not made any difference to my progress.

Respect others and you will be respected was one of the first things i was taught, perhaps you need this lesson you lady.

Apologies for the outburst but this issue is something that is very close to my heart and I do not appreciate ignorant, immature and totally unfactual comments from jumped up people like yourself.

have a nice day

NO its not ok to sell it.

I think the Tories will do their best to sell. Although i heard on the news last night that there could be a legal challenge.

Its a great shame that a City like ours does not have the full facility to show these works of art off more.

The other point raised was whether they could sell for their full market price during a recession.

Our silverware should not be sold off in this way. If we want a Titanic museum or whatever they must find another way.

How about ABP dipping in

If you knew anything about the LSC, which stands for the Learning and Skills Council, you would know they overspent in previous years, (granted it's government funding) that's why Ictchen was pulled along with colleges locally, they granted money then pulled due to the overspend, the LSC executive director resigned over the matter.

How much money is coming from the council for this project? I can tell you not a great deal,

if you read on threads yesterday you would know I'm totally against the council selling off the cities treasure's for a museum regardless of which party is in control.

Sorry binman you are wrong, they actually Thornhill tenants got kitchens and bathrooms 2nd, the reason for this was investment by the NDC programme (7.5 million)
Why did Thornhill get regenration money in the first place, because resident and tenants submitted an application for it..And won ahead of Paulgroves...Yes I said residents and tenants did the hard work, (with some support from SCC)they got their behinds and did it themselves.

Many of the projects these residents and tenants put together are now being mainstreamed across the city.

If honestly believe the government gave the regeneration money to Thornhill because at that time it was nice place to live, bring up children and didn't lack local authority investment, then I believe you really need to think on.

You'll find that for as long as Southampton has a Tory Council this failing government will continue to slash funding. Denham knows that he's a spent force and will struggle to keep his seat next year. People shouldn't forget the debacle at Itchen College and the reduction in the government grant which has forced our council tax to double in 10 years. Shame on you Denham.
