FOUR people were treated in hospital today following a three-vehicle accident that paralysed part of a major road in Hampshire.

A caravanette was wrecked and a car finished on its roof following a three vehicle smash that shut the west bound section of the A31 near Stoney Cross shortly after 3.30am.

A woman, who had been sleeping in the rear of the caravanette, suffered serious injuries after apparently being thrown from the vehicle.

Fire services crews from Burley, Lyndhurst and Totton spent about two hours at the scene, helping ambulance crews treat the injured but did not have to extricate anyone from the vehicles.

Four casualties were taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

Police halted traffic, including articulated lorries, which had to turn around and go back along the carriageway to the Cadnam roundabout and re-routed through Lyndhurst.

Police have mounted an investigation into the accident and the road was reopened after about six hours.
