A CAMPAIGN has been launched to save The Railway Hotel in Whitchurch.

The hotel and pub, in Station Road, closed on July 6 amid rumours that it has been sold by its owner, pub company Punch Taverns, to a developer.

Residents have launched a website calling for it to remain a pub and hotel after potential buyers were advised that it could be converted to property or offices, subject to planning permission.

The website, called Save the Railway, has been set up by Whitchurch resident and Wessex regional director for the Campaign for Real Ale, John Buckley.

Mr Buckley, of McFauld Way, said: “Whitchurch is famous for its pubs. They’re a real draw for the town, and the Railway is the only one in that area.

“We’ve heard that Punch is discussing with a developer converting the pub for use as residential space.

“It’s a shame and we’re going to fight it. With the right management The Railway Hotel could be a hub of activity, providing sandwiches for commuters, a youth club and a little shop. We expect to see a planning application come in soon to change its use and we’re going to have a public meeting.”

The couple who last had the lease for the pub, Kevin and Ann Pattinson, finished last October but the pub continued to operate under a short-term agreement. Last December, a condition was put on the licence banning live music, following complaints.

Jo Sandall, communications manager for Punch Taverns, said: “It is always our preference that our pubs continue to trade as pubs. We do appreciate the concerns of local residents but review our estate regularly to ensure our sites are maximising their potential.

“The Railway Hotel is currently for sale and we are in discussions with interested parties.”
