CHANGES have been made to a new Whitchurch parking scheme after residents complained it would make the lack of spaces in the town worse.

The new borough council scheme was due to come into force in the autumn but after the complaints, some of the proposals have been shelved.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Cabinet member for community safety, development and transport, Councillor Clive Sanders, has approved a report from officers recommending the scheme, after the deadline for consultation passed last night.

The report said: “In response to the public advertisement and notification, 12 formal comments and objections were received.

“Ten objected to specific elements of the scheme whilst the other two voiced concerns regarding the likely effect the parking controls will have on traffic speeds in the town.

“The recommended way forward is to implement the advertised parking controls but with alterations.”

Double yellow lines will be painted in areas of Newbury Street, London Street, Winchester Street, Church Street, Bell Street, Ardglen Road, Micheldever Road, London Road and Well’s Lane.

A 30-minute waiting zone will be put in Newbury Street.

In light of residents’ complaints, single yellow lines will not be painted between property numbers 69 to 79 in London Road or between property numbers 35 to 41 in Newbury Street.

A proposed limited waiting area outside numbers 15 and 17 in London Street and the planned extension of the limited waiting area outside the chemists in Newbury Street have also been scrapped and the disabled parking in that street will be retained.

The new changes will be monitored after three months and six months.

The changes are the second phase of a Whitchurch parking control scheme.

Phase one of the scheme was introduced in early 2007 and the second phase was deferred for monitoring while the new scheme bedded in and also to assess how the reopening of the enlarged car park at Winchester Street affected the situation.
