Mark Oaten backs campaign to stop new Sainsbury’s store in Bishop’s Waltham

MP backs campaign to stop Sainsbury’s MP backs campaign to stop Sainsbury’s

WINCHESTER MP Mark Oaten has backed a campaign to stop a controversial Sainsbury’s superstore opening in a Hampshire town.

The Liberal Democrat pledged his support after a meeting with the Bishop’s Waltham Action Group, which was set up by independent shops worried that they would be put out of business.

The MP has promised to raise a number of concerns raised by residents and businesses with Winchester City Council.

Mr Oaten said: “We are increasingly living in an era of large multi-nationals and whilst there is no doubt that Sainsbury’s provides a superb service to millions of people it is important that we remember that small is beautiful too.

“I just don’t think a Sainsbury’s superstore is appropriate in the heart of Bishop’s Waltham.”

One of the issues the MP will highlight is the impact delivery lorries would have on nearby villages such as Twyford, Droxford and West Meon.

As reported in the Daily Echo hundreds of people attended three public meetings held by Sainsbury’s in the town last month to put plans for the store on the Abbey Mill site under the microscope.

The supermarket is also waiting for the results of a public consultation in which 13,000 residents were leafleted.

However, bosses have admitted that they would still submit a planning application as early as this month, regardless of the result.

That would mean the shop could be open as early as August 2010.

The 35,000 sq ft store would cover an area of land more than two times the size of an Olympic swimming pool and employ around 350 full and part time workers.

it's all very well for NIMBYs to campaign against the supermarket but what about people in the area on low incomes who can't afford to shop in the current stores? what's Mark Oaten done for them?

Too right bloody Liberal toffee nose stuck up organic tofu eating hemp sandle wearing fairy... Get in the real world and support something the real people of Waltham want.. A choice of where to shop.. on a budget..and heaven forbid maybe even work there. If this store does not go ahead it will ruin B/w . We need more ameinaties like this what with all the new houses popping up in peoples back gardens and chip shops.
We have lost so much in the recent past such as the Little chef , Vineys, The Tyrella. And to boot some Fella ruined our Palace..

I cannot believe what I'm reading in some of these (pro-JS) Comments. Ignoring the rude and personal ones, do the superstore supporters really want a supermarket for every square mile? And why are Southampton and Eastleigh people wishing a superstore on us in Bishops Waltham? if they want yet another one, fair enough, but what's wrong with their own back yard? I would have thought Hedge End is near enough for us all! I do NOT want a superstore, of any kind, in Bishops Waltham - it is the town I live in; I am not rich, toffee-nosed or anything else, but we have now got a good range of food shops in town which I am delighted about, and would be very angry to see disappear. I do NOT want to see one big, predatory superstore, and a main street full of boarded-up buildings, second-hand shops, and fast-food eateries.
Please stop this idiocy. There's no need for this store, and the only benefit would be to Sainsbury's shareholders. Please, let's keep the town's personality. There are so few characterful places left in the Portsmouth/Southampt
on/Fareham conurbation!
