Fluoride campaigners criticise rising cost of battle

IF health chiefs use all the money they have set aside to fight the judicial review into the decision to fluoridate Hampshire’s water, it would take their total spending on the issue to £650,000.

That figure – which includes a £400,000 war chest to defend the legal challenge – is enough to pay for more than 30 dental nurses each earning £20,000 for a year.

And it doesn’t even include the staff costs associated with staging last year’s 14-week public consultation, or the cash which has been ploughed in by the NHS in Southampton.

Anti-fluoride campaigners say the health authorities would be better off spending the money on frontline services to target the poor dental health in children that fluoridation is being brought in to improve.

“The amount that’s been spent is an outrageous waste of public money, and they should stop the whole process straight away,” said John Spottiswoode, chairman of Hampshire Against Fluoridation.

“All the way along it has been a waste of money, and it’s just getting worse.”

He went on to say: “The NHS should be spending money on things that are worthwhile, and not on something so controversial that will have no benefit.”

There are many reasons to oppose fluoridation of water systems:
See (www.fluoridealert.o
rg) "50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridfation" by Dr. Paul Connett.
He lists 190 reaearch studies to support the 50 reasons.

The cost of equipment and the annual cost of toxic waste fluoride chemical is bad enough, but consider the absolute waste in dumping it into the drinking water. Fluoridation is insanely inefficient with 99.5% of fluoridated water going down the drain (toilet, shower. washing machine, watering gardens, etc.), wasting 99.5% of the chemical cost. People only drink 0.5% of the water they use. A plan to give away fluoride tablets free would be much cheaper. Then the rest of us would not be forced to consume this poison every day.

The truth of the matter is that millions of Brits are on post code lottery care distribution while the Health Bosses are wasting money fighting a court case that may well wind-up as an EU case, cost millions of pounds, and go on for years.

The most inexpensive and immediate way to have an impact on poor dental health is to educate people using public service advertisements on television - the £650K they're spending on the case could have gone to television ads about the importantance of dental health. Then, the public would be well served by a effective and proactive campaign.

However, to the Health Bosses, the water fluoridation battle is more about an imposition of will at any cost - even to sacrificing the health and welfare of the lives of people entrusted to them.

You can place a safe bet that the Health Bosses will spend any amount of money to win this court case; they would shut down ten hospitals in the blink of an eye to keep the opposition from winning.
