Ladies' Day a hit at Southampton Boat Show

More stories about: Southampton Boat Show

IT was a day of style, sophistication and stunning outfits.

Women flocked to the PSP Southampton Boat Show in their droves yesterday as the show celebrated Ladies’ Day.

Decked out in their finest frocks, dozens of gorgeous girls stepped forward to enter the Daily Echo’s Best Dressed Lady competition.

With such a bevy of beauties it was a tough decision – but after much deliberation the award was bestowed upon suave and sophisticated Angie Jones.

The 49-year-old from Ringwood, visiting the show for her first time with her 18-year-old daughter Natalie, said: “I couldn’t believe I won but it’s absolutely brilliant.

“It’s the first time I’ve been to the show and we had such a great day – winning Best Dressed Lady was the icing on the cake.”

Angie won a trip out on a swanky yacht and a meal for four.

Round-the-world yachtswoman Dee Caffari led attempts to break the world record for the most people sending a message in semaphore at the Record Breakers stage at various times throughout the day. Powerboat champion Shelley Jory and Jo Dixie from title sponsor PSP got the best views over the boat show as they scaled the rigging of tallship Lord Nelson.

In a display of girl power, the pair donned harnesses to climb 150ft up the spectacular Jubilee sailing Trust tallship.

The charity, based in Woolston, helps disabled and able-bodied people experience sailing in an equal environment, and its 140ft ship Lord Nelson has been one of the stars of the show.

The proceeds from the day will go to children’s charity Touching Tiny Lives.

Andrew Williams, managing director of National Boat Shows, said: “Our second annual Ladies’ Day at the PSP Southampton Boat Show has been more successful than expected.

“We’ve had beautifully dressed ladies galore in their finest outfits, adding a real touch of class and glamour to the show.”

Well done to Angie for winning and well done to the judges for not being ageist. I was disappointed that the organisers stopped selling ladies day tickets the day before (could only be obtained on-line) and information about the ladies day was not that clear. Despite walking around the show several times, I did not see the droves of women dressed up for the special day. Most people were dressed relatively casually and I felt a bit overdressed. I understand that ladies were approached during the day by an organiser and photographer for the best dressed lady competition. I noticed a photographer taking pictures of 2 well dressed young women but otherwise seemed to walk straight past others I thought had made an effort to dress up. So again well done Angie. I hope the organisers can grow this special day and offer a bit more next year.
