A CAMPAIGN group set up to fight the controversial opening of a Sainsbury’s store in a quiet Hampshire town have sent their petition to Downing Street.

The Bishop’s Waltham Action Group has so far collected 574 signatures from local residents opposed to the opening of the store on the Abbey Mill site.

Bishop's Waltham residents say new store is not welcome

The group claims the proposed store will have a detrimental effect on the town’s independent shops putting many out of business.

They also claim the store will bring high volumes of traffic and have an environmental impact on the Palace Ruins and South Pond.

Henry Fryer, chairman of Bishop’s Waltham Action Group, said: “Nearly six hundred people want to tell the Prime Minister that opposition to Sainsbury’s plans for the Bishop’s Waltham Abbey Mill site symbolises an issue of national importance.

It comes after a massive public consultation by the supermarket which is waiting for the results of a questionnaire sent to 13,000 residents in July.

But bosses admitted that regardless of the result they would still submit a planning application, which could see the store open as early as August 2010.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, if you want to support your local shops then shop there. If not shut up stop whinging and go back to eating your organic musli. Nearly 600 out of 13000!!! that doesn't really say to me that the "PEOPLE" of Bishops Waltham are opposed. I for one am not and i have lived here all my life. And to be blunt and honest i don't care about the local shops because they are overpriced, with the execption of Hylands which will retain its loyal customer base.
Get it built...
I have a young family and we cannot afford to shop anywhere but supermarkets so we have to drive to Hedge End. Now we can walk and get our groceries at a decent price.
So go to Downing Street and while you there pop into your weekday house and have a cup of chamomile tea.

Good post.
Wonder if these are the same people who use one in another town, on somebody elses doorstep, as long as it is not on theirs?

Agreed. I moved from Bishop's Waltham partly due to it's lack of facilities. A large supermaket is needed in the town.
Also the fish shop doesn't give loyalty points!

I guess they have been bitten by the same bug as those in Lymington who were against a '99p' shop spoiling their quaint, Olde English high street!

If the locals are against it, as they claim, then the shop will have no customers and J S will pull out!

Somehow I think that they will have a long wait!
